I certainly wouldn’t classify myself as the biggest Burt Reynolds fan. He did make a series of films in the 1970’s and 1980’s that I found entertaining. Some of them relied on some comic shtick to work, and – as comedies – they definitely accomplished what they set out to do. Yes, SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT is a bit of genius given its time and place in film history; and DELIVERANCE certainly maintains the same appeal for audiences today that it did back then. But for all of my money Burt’s best has always been SHARKY’S MACHINE.

Based on the novel by William Diehl, SHARKY’S tells the story of the somewhat grizzled, somewhat disillusioned former narcotics detective Tom Sharky. After a sting goes horribly awry, Sharky gets demoted to vice, where it’s been said that “cops go to end their careers.” However, he and his “colorful crew” end up stumbling across a case of political corruption that might very well implicate members of the department Sharky formerly served. And crimelord Victor D’Anton is not going down easily, certainly not where his hitman/brother Billy Score is concerned.

In short, I’ve often argued with friends that the Burt Reynolds vehicle is one of the best cop procedurals from the 1980’s. It’s a dynamic mix of the formula: veteran cops thrown together find themselves up against ‘the system’ and their attempts to set things right.Read more ›

Tom Sharky' (Burt Reynolds) is a no-nonsense cop,working in the narcotics division in the the Atlanta Police
Department.
However when his actions lead to civilian casualties he's sent down-stairs to work in Vice...
'Sharky' doesn't take demotion well and still wants to go after the big-fish out there, he's used to doing things
his way.
During a steak-out watching the activities and contacts that frequent 'Dominoe's (Rachel Ward) appartment
'Sharky' witnesses a killing, he believes it is the high-class hooker that's taken the hit.
Though not the senior officer, 'Sharky' brings the team on-board, rather than hand the case over to 'Homicide'
they want to solve the case themselves, they go after gang-land boss 'Victor D'Anton Scorelli' (Vittorio Gassman)
and his hit-men....a newly elected politician is also in 'Sharky's' sights.
'Rachel Ward' putting the glamour into the 1981 offering.
This is an often violent 80's cop-movie which will, for sure bring back many memories of the movie-scene back
then.
There is an element of tension along with the humour 'Burt Reynold's' often brought to the screen, 'Sharky' doesn't
always trade pleasantries he trades bullets.
The Blu-ray version of the film at this time is 'Import' but can be purchased at a reasonable price, the good news
for fans of 80's cop-movies such as this is the film is 'Region-Free'
Picture Quality is a little below-par at times but certainly superior to the DVD version.

A Burt Reynold's film noir kinda flick. Excellent entertainment and not overdone or "campy". Great performance for But and right up his alley in these type roles. If ya want entertainment that you don't have to think hard about, this movie is for you. Solid acting and moves along nicely.

Finally have a worthy version of this movie in my collection. This is by far one of my favorite films, and certainly the best cop movie of its kind in my opinion.

Don't know why Burt Reynolds didn't direct more films as this one was certainly a class act. The movie has a perfect mix of drama and humor as well as sexiness action and suspense. Cast is exemplary, particularly Burt and Rachel Ward who also had great on screen chemistry. The Scenes at Sharkey's place are just classic in my opinion.

as far as the Blue Ray upgrade is concerned, its a significant improvement, images are much clearer and the widescreen really shows the movie as it was meant to be and adds considerably to the experience.

I personally don't require a movie like this to look overly sharp, and think the high definition is quite good.
My only issue is that there were no extras. It would have been great to see some of the behind the scenes director footage and hear from some of the cast.

But then sometimes less is more, because what you get is what the director intended.

Finally, its also a great soundtrack which has also been upgraded sonically.
Very happy overall indeed!!

Excellent Blu-ray from Warner of an action film favorite from 1981. Perfect picture and a big, wide stereo surround track bring this gritty story to life. Reynolds directs and stars and acquits himself well in both hats. Rachel Ward is beautiful and memorable as Dominoe and Henry Silva and Vittorio Gassman are properly sleazy villains.
