I hesitated to watch this movie because of all the bad reviews, but I actually thought it was great. One reviewer had said that he knew it was a movie he would live to hate just from the trailer and shouldn't have been surprised. So based on that, I watched the trailer and since it looked like just the movie for me, I watched it. I'll add that I love a lot of the old mad cap capers, but there are rarely interesting women in them. This one has wit, absurdity, AND interesting women, all held together with a bit of mystery hijynx. I laughed out loud. Through the whole thing. But if you don't think the trailer is funny, it is probably not for you.

I am a fickle Johnny Depp fan. Loved him in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Also, The Lone Ranger, Dark Shadows and Transcendence. Some of his other movies, not so much. Mortdecai portrays a snobbish, aristocratic Englishman (Johnny Depp), his beautiful wife (Gwyneth Paltrow) and his man-servant (Paul Bettany). The movie shows Mortdecai being solicited by the British Government to recover a stolen, priceless painting. Mortdecai is recruited due to his history of nefarious business dealings in the art world and that he is financially, legally and morally bankrupt. Most of the movie involves the trio chasing down the painting and, almost, evading the bad guys. The movie is probably more silly than funny but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I did purchase this movie and recommend it.

I am absolutely mystified by the bad reviews. I can only assume they were written by people who are not fans of British comedy. British humor is understated, dry, based on character, and occasionally loopy. It is a recognizable genre, or used to be apparently. If you enjoy P.G. Wodehouse novels, you should enjoy this.

This is a very entertaining movie with excellent performances all round, especially from Depp, who gives a brilliant comic performance, for which he deserves an Oscar. It's a master class in comedy.

I expected this just to be another barely watchable Johnny Depp eccentric over the top from reality character movie, but was pleasantly surprised that this was actually quite a clever movie. Based on a series of books by Kyril Bonfiglioli, if you watch the extras you'll see a genuine love of those books as they're constantly fondly mentioned by Depp, Paul Bettany and the other actors, who genuinely wanted to bring what they loved about reading those stories to film audiences. Their love for the books makes me want to check them out. Not having read them though, doesn't detract from understanding the plot or anything.

Depp plays Charlie Mortdecai, an almost bankrupt mansion living upper class British aristocrat. Mortdecai has just grown a moustache, he loves the thing, unfortunately his wife played by Paltrow despises it and forces him to sleep in another room until he gets rid of it, which he is reluctant to do, hoping she'll come around to loving it. Mortdecai is a Maxwell Smart style klutz, who is constantly saved from peril by his loyal butler/body guard Jock. Mortdecai plans to make back his fortune through a bit of art fraud, one of his major problems is a police detective who has wanted to sleep with his wife since their university days who is always hanging around, seemingly being encouraged by Paltrow's character at times.

If you like the bumbling hero type storyline, you won't go wrong with Mortdecai.

Caveat: I am actually not much of a Jonny Depp fan. I like few of his films but others, not so much.

After watching this movie on Prime, I am amazed that it did not do well in the US box office. Mortdecai was a delicious surprise!
It is an enjoyably campy, and silly comedy that was funny throughout. If you watch this movie you will forget the real world for a couple of hours or so. . .

I think the movie suffered a bit of problems in pacing in the first 20 minutes or so –it dragged on a bit from about 15 minutes through 25 minutes more or less. (I fear that the movie was not edited crisply so that portion –I almost turned it off).

Yet, suddenly, perhaps at 30 minutes it seemed to catch its wind; and from then on it was simply funny and entertaining.
Johnny Depp is so fully in character that one doesn’t think of him as Johnny Depp. Gwyneth Paltrow starts out rather muted, but becomes quite commanding –and delightful-- in the story. Paul Bettany and Ewan McGregor are both very enjoyable as they play opposite foils to Johnny Depp in a perfect way! The characters, as silly as they are, are presented nicely and with sufficient depth to be quite credible.

Anyway, it is a very entertaining movie –if you like funny, chase-theme movies, and want to forget the world for a bit, turn it on, grab a glass of scotch and enjoy a well filmed, nicely paced (aside from a bit at the start) movie. . .

I don't understand why this movie did not do better at the box office. It reminded me of a cross between Austin Powers, the Avengers, and the Pink Panther. The movie was more about over-the-top characters, than plot. The characters were so humorous that I enjoyed it. Gwyneth Paltro, Ewen McGregor, and Johnny Depp were great. The character of Jock, played by Paul Bethany, made the film. I thought it was very, very good and worth seeing.
