Format: Paperback
Red Girls details the lives of three women: the clairvoyant Manyo, from her youth as the adopted daughter of a young laboring couple in post-World War II Japan to her marriage into the affluent Akakuchiba family and her rise and death as the family matriarch; Manyo's rebellious daughter Kemari, who reigns as the leader of a motorcycle gang in the 1980s and becomes an incredibly successful manga artist; and Toko, Kemari's daughter, who tells the stories of her mother and grandmother, and whose story is still being written.

Red Girls is divided into three parts, each focused on a different character: the first on Manyo, the second on Kemari, and the third on our narrator herself, Toko. Manyo remains a central character throughout each section, and even after death continues to influence those remaining. Especially Toko, as she learns her grandmother is a killer.

While the focus is on these three women, Red Girls is also very much about the characters in their lives: family, friends, and frenemies. Characters appear and reappear throughout the book, all connected to the central characters in one way or another. Pages are dedicated to Manyo's children (besides Kemari) and friends, all of which are fully fleshed out and serve a purpose to the story. One of my favorites of these characters was "The Goldfish," a friend/antagonist to Manyo. The two share a number of scenes throughout the book, not all of them friendly, but it was nice to see the two of them grow closer throughout the years.

Speaking of years, Red Girls is also about the changing of times.

An enjoyable novel that seamlessly blends family saga, a touch of mystery, and a meditation at Japan's cultural history over the past three generations. There are a handful of repetitive moments, but on the whole it draws the reader along with a series of idiosyncratic characters carefully rendered by a narrator whose own involvement, and the reasons for her emphasis and omissions, only become clear in the final section. I'd be interested to see how this would look as a miniseries.

Special kudos to the translator. This is no kiddy book. The language is complex, metaphorical and fanciful. The story is unexpected and intruiging...it's a deep, deep dark chocolate of story, rich and bitter.
