So this is what the state of horror has come to: putting horrible no budget movies in theaters, because the studio knows no matter how bad the film is people will see it in droves. Why people!? WHY!?? *sigh*... So The Gallows was shot on an estimated $100k and it definitely shows in the final product, because the entire film is nothing more than an idiot with a camera recording other idiots vandalize a school then freak out, run around (with the camera pointed at feet half the time) and naturally split up so they can start getting off'd by some vengeful spirit named "Charlie".

Apparently 20 years ago this Charlie was a theatre student that was accidentally hung when a prop malfunction occurred during a school play. I guess the school thought it would be a good idea to create a real working gallows (nice work guys!). The movie was actually shot a few years ago under the name Stage Fright, where the filmmakers released a trailer online, which eventually caught the attention of Blumhouse Productions. Seeing a potential money maker Jason Blum bought the film and threw a little extra money at them (which was probably just pocketed) to reshoot some scenes and make a completed movie.

It has been many years since a film last angered me, but that feat was finally once again accomplished by The Gallows! Not only was I nodding off during the film, but after the terrible climax I was enraged. The ending not only insulted our intelligence, but also wasted our time. Granted, I'm not a fan of found footage, but I at least try to keep an open mind when going in, especially if a movie tries something different. The Gallows didn't even bother to try.

Rented this one from the Box to save myself about 4 bucks on this way over priced cutting room scraps.
You know from the start that this is going to be a total waste of time and money when the lead character Ryan (Ryan Shoos) is this totally obnoxious God's gift to himself, got to be the center of attention class clown that happens to have a handy cam attached to his hand. We have to listen to his nonstop babbling as he puts down everyone he comes in contact with. His performance detracts from the already weak storyline. To add insult to injury, we have to listen to four of these teens scream and holler at one another when the action heats up (if you can call it that) that made my skin crawl and my ears hurt. "THE VIEWER SHOULD BE PAID TO WATCH THIS ONE"!!!
The story is about an accidental (they thought) hanging of a high school drama student during a play called Gallows . Fast forward to the present and the school is once again putting on the Gallows play ( yea, thats what I thought too). The kids are the offspring of the the ill fated drama troupe of the last showing of Gallows. Ryan convinces Reese (Reese Mishler) to return to the school for??? and Cassidy (Cassidy Gifford)) insists on tagging along as this story finally starts to wake the viewer from the deep sleep the first third of the movie put you in. The ending is about as climatic as the begining was. NOT!
There is enough cursing although not as much as I expected with some f...words thrown in and I was amazed that there wasn't any nudity in this. So, we weren't rewarded with any flesh as payment for watching this thing!

Movie was somewhat suspenseful, but was also a little predictable. if you haven't seen every scary movie out there I would definitely watch this one, i am sure it will give you a fright, but if you are a constant scary movie goer, than i would not suggest watching this movie, it is too predictable to let it scare you and the plot can be a little dim. But overall it was a good movie, if i didn't want to get scared.

This is a good found footage movie...if you like those. It wasn't as good as the hype made it out to be...but it had some really good acting, and a unique story line. I loved the twist at the end...never saw it coming!

Ending was a let down but the suspense throughout the movie was awesome. It's mostly from the perspective of each of their cameras and phones but still, you figure out what has happened to everyone and you find out how it's all connected.

Oooow! You can't imagine how much I wanted to like this movie?! I'm a sucker for a found footage movie (as I state in nearly all my reviews), but this one just fails to make any kind of impression. For starters, I was able to predict nearly every event that happens as it's very amateur story telling. The supposed "twists" can be seen a mile away and none of the characters (with the exception of Cassidy) are even remotely likeable. Which I am completely surprised by, as I was fully expecting to dislike her due to the constant reminders back in the day when her mom was on Regis and Kathie Lee and all she ever talked about was "Cody and Cassidy". But that's besides the point. I still, for the life of me can't understand why these weak looking boys are cast as the "tough, football stars?!" I've seen it way too many times in the last few years. Granted, when I was in high school maybe the "tough" guys only SEEMED tough at that time? I guess you could go with that theory? However, those guys where KNOWN to be tough, and they put off the vibe to go with it. The two in this film, Reese and Ryan (of course that's their names), attempt the tough guy act. However, I come closer to believing them to be more like Finch, rather than Stiffler. That's an American Pie reference, in case you don't know.

Final Verdict: Pass on this. It's just not interesting.
