░░░░░LEFT ME ALREADY WANTING EPISODE 8░░░░░

For the last few years Star Wars fans have had one collective message for JJ Abrams, "Do not screw this up!!!". I'm happy to report he did not!! I left the theater last night completely satisfied. The only thing that was even remotely disappointing is that Episode 8 is still a good bit away and I want to see what happens in it right now!

Don't worry there will be no spoilers below. I will not mention anything that hasn't been seen in the trailers. (However, do not read the comments section of this review if you haven't seen the movie. There are some spoilers in there.)

My biggest concern with this going is was that it wasn't going to feel like a Star Wars movie. Even for all the problems with the prequels, at least they looked like they occurred in the Star Wars universe. For The Force Awakens we were dealing with a new story, developed under a new film studio, with a new director who has a recent habit of giving familiar stories a completely new look and feel (The new Star Trek series, specifically). And with Harrison Ford, who has openly never liked the Han Solo character, involved there was just a fear that this could be the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls all over again. But it wasn't. It was awesome!

The one thing I was hoping for that wasn't in the film was Han Solo giving someone advice about how you always shoot first. There was even a perfect scene with Han and Rey that would have been perfect for such a line. It would have brought so much satisfaction to the hordes of us who were unhappy about the changes made to the original trilogy.

The beginning of the movie has a distinctive look and feel that's not exactly the same as the other films.

More rewarding than anything else that you can find in a movie theater.

I went to see it again today, and to my surprise 11 days after its opening it was sold out!

That's right....
SOLD OUT ON THREE SCREENS AFTER 11 DAYS

A lot of people have been waiting for this movie for decades. Unfortunately due to the advent of the internet and active need for people to be posers for the sake of irony and authenticity, a lot of those people have specifically been waiting on this movie just to hate it and claim how right they were in its awfulness.

It's really too bad that no matter how hard you try, you just can't bring yourself to hate this movie. Not really. Not truly. Even the contrarian circle relented.

So, if you all see a negative review, it's one of two things: A troll (who will almost always spoil it in their "review), or a kid who is simply trying too hard to be original and authentic - in which case, you can just *feel* them grit their teeth with every keystroke. To them, being constipated is better than having fun.

To the rest of you though? Go see the movie. Have it. Don't be a hipster. And don't be constipated.

...and my dad having grown up reading every science fiction book he could get his hands on, we of course went to see Star Wars as soon as it hit the Tri-State Mall on the Pennsylvania / Delaware border. How do I feel about this latest contribution to the mythology, via J. J. Abrams? Well, my dad probably would have loved it as much as I did. Here's a few words with **NO spoilers**

Daisy Ridley was so well chosen for the lead role that it cannot be overstated. Abrams was wise to cast an unknown, and accordingly should be praised for the risk he took in this particular choice (VII may have been somewhat of a disaster if this call had been different). Ridley has tremendous range and can convincingly alternate between emotions and attitudes in a heartbeat, crucial to pulling off the character of Rey; on top of this, she has a strong physical presence onscreen (also crucial to the character). No major complaints about casting in VII, although sticking with unknowns even for the small parts might have been best (I was reminded of LOST and Heroes due to a couple of the actors, which briefly pulled me out of the VII trance).

I'll admit, the main reason I went was to see Ford, Fisher and Hamill in the same movie again. The three of them have vastly differing amounts of screen time in VII, but I expect in VIII to see more of the one who had the least. I wasn't anticipating so many plotline parallels between VII and the original trilogy, but this *intentional* idea turned out to work rather well, adding to the nostalgia. The script was generally sharp, pushing boundaries while still respecting the earliest work of Lucas.

Is it a masterpiece? No. Is it ground-breaking that transcends the saga? No. Is it an incredible film filled to the brim with exceptional characters, shocking visuals, and a solid soundtrack that pays homage to the original? Yes.

Director JJ Abrams masterfully blends the old with the new. It'd be expected that Han, Luke, and Leah would be re-introduced as sidekicks, but they're easily just as interesting and relevant as they were 30 years ago. The power-house acting of new comers John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, and Oscar Isaac show viewers the energy and intensity that we so desperately wanted to see in a sequel to the 'Star Wars' franchise.

The villain Kylo Ren was perfectly cast. Actor Adam Driver may seem like an awkward and goofy nemesis of the heroes, but that's what makes him the best actor to play the role. Hayden Christensen was the young, whiny Anakin Skywalker and he too makes Darth Vader a great villain. Every great hero and villain must start from somewhere, so why not make Darth Vader a whiny brat who's passed up from a promotion or Kylo Ren an awkward and lame villain who's unsure of himself. Keep in mind, this is a trilogy, so we'll most likely see our pathetic Kylo Ren turn into a fearsome foe that'll match up to the powerful heroine Rey by the end of this saga.

As for the plot, there's nothing new shown, yet the viewer can't help being drawn into the story from the moment it starts to the moment the credis start rolling. Sure, the ending felt rushed and the scene-stealing Han Solo's death was melodramatic at best, but these low points of the movie didn't last long and everything else was so polished it more than makes up for what was missing. This is not a movie to salivate over, but it's certainly worth getting excited about with every viewing.
