Nine Things About the Film "The Hateful Eight"

1. This is Quentin Tarantino's eighth film, and it's his most controlled and focused one.

2. Set shortly after the Civil War, the story is about a group of people headed for a town named Red Rock but who get stranded at a stagecoach lodge during a blizzard. Everybody has their own agendas for being there, and some of those agendas are at cross purposes.

3. The movie is described as a western (Ennio Morricone even wrote the score, which is his first western score in 40 years), but it would be more accurate to say the movie is a actually a mystery. It just happens to be set in the Old West.

4. A lot of the actors have worked with Tarantino before, so everybody kind of fits together like a glove. They know the mix of comic-seriousness that Tarantino goes for, and how to say the dialogue that is just past the line of real life. They all play off of each other very well.

5. Jennifer Jason Leigh plays Daisy, a captured murderer on her way to being hanged in Red Rock. Daisy says the least, but she is the most interesting character in the movie, She gets beaten by men over and over, but Daisy not only takes it, she seems to draw strength from it. It's a pretty powerful, paradoxical performance by Leigh.

6. Everybody knows that a Tarantino film is often reminiscent of the old violent grindhouse films of decades past. And while this film does have his trademark violence, especially during the last half, there's not as much as some people will want.

7. Some people may be surprised to see that Tarantino's script contains just as much substance as style.

For the physical product itself, totally awesome. The case is well made and the slip-cover is textured and such. Really cool. Even opens up to some art of the eight and the cabin. For the movie itself, also awesome! Don't get me wrong, it's slow as all hell. I mean.. really slow. It's 3 hours of conversations peppered with some blood, gore, and violence. I'd say 95% of the movie is probably just people talking but that's exactly why I love it. Each character has a past that they talk about which helps them feel more fleshed out. They didn't just show up and exist for the sake of the movie. They have histories that were brought into play and the acting accompanying these histories is just beautiful. It's like a game of Clue except everyone playing in a racist, foul-mouthed a**hat that's lived a messed up life and wants to take it out on everyone else.

As far as I'm concerned, all of the 1-star reviews are coming from folks with short attention spans that need explosions, 2 minutes of dialogue and then more explosions. Some are upset about the avid use of the N word throughout the film but considering this movie is about a bunch of civil war vets, uneducated gang members and other mountain folk in the late 1800's, I don't see why they would censor anything they have to say and you bet your a** a good deal of them had a lot of hatred to spew in every which way. I think the dialogue, acting and overall plot are totally time-appropriate and make the entire movie a lot of fun. The story isn't about some grand adventure to save the world or kill Hitler. It's the story of some folks who end up in a cabin together and madness ensues. If you love Tarantino's dialogue throughout his previous films and the way the characters talk to one another, you'll love this film.

I really liked this movie a lot. It was my second favorite movie of 2015, behind only Mad Max: Fury Road.

This movie seems to be receiving many negative reviews, based mostly on the following criticisms:

#1 - "The movie is slow and/or too long." If you don't like long movies, or movies that are not filled with non-stop action, I agree that you will not enjoy this movie. Avoid it. If you enjoy suspense, mystery, and entertaining dialogue in spite of run time, you probably will enjoy this movie.

#2 - "This movie has too much gory violence and/or gross sex talk (based on one scene)." If you don't like gory violence or "gross" sex talk, don't watch this movie, and don't watch any movie directed by Quentin Tarantino. If you tend to like the way he uses the humor of over-the-top violence without pulling you so far out of the story that you're any less than enthralled with the fates of the characters on screen, you will probably like this movie.

#3 - "Quentin Tarantino is a dumb liberal who only wants to make message movies about race." If you don't like movies that are themed around race relations in the United States, don't watch this movie. If this movie made you uncomfortable because of this, it's probably a good thing that you suffered through it and had to consider race relations over the history of the United States for three hours, even if you were still just angry afterward (toward blacks, whites, Mexicans, whichever).

#4 - "Quentin Tarantino is obsessed with the N-word." See #2. If you don't like hearing the N-word under any circumstances, you won't like this movie.
