Product Description

Amazon.com Review

The VTech 1920's 900-MHz frequency offers better range than traditional cordless phones and features digital transmission for enhanced clarity and privacy. Plus, with caller ID/call waiting, you'll know who's calling before you pick up the phone.

To set up the phone, we inserted the battery pack (included), plugged in the AC power, and connected the standard RJ-11 phone cord. You can also insert and charge a second battery pack (not included) in the base unit to either power the base unit during an electric outage or for use as a spare handset battery.

You control the VTech 1920 through 11 buttons on the handset (in addition to the usual 0-9, *, and #). Although setting up and programming the phone is straightforward and intuitive, the instruction manual is useful for reviewing advanced features and caller ID functions. Note that you cannot program the caller ID system with your local area codes. When dialing from caller ID memory, the phone supports only seven-digit automatic dialing; you must supply the area code (and the prefix "1" if necessary).

In our test of the VTech 1920, we placed the base unit in a typical home, where walls, floors, and other obstructions might interfere with signal quality.

We made a variety of local and long-distance calls, and the phone sounded only slightly softer than our reference corded desk phone. We noticed some signal degradation--static and the sound cutting in and out--when we moved the handset about 100 feet from the base. At about 200 feet, the phone activated its auto channel-searching feature. At this distance the phone could not find a clearer channel and became unusable until we returned the handset to the base. This is the tradeoff for the superior clarity of digital transmission--the phone stops working abruptly when the signal weakens beyond a certain point.

With its terrific price, digital 900-MHz transmission quality, call waiting caller ID, and well-chosen set of features, the VTech 1920 makes a great, general purpose cordless phone.

Pros:

  • Good value
  • Modern styling
  • 900 MHz digital transmission for clarity and privacy

Cons:

  • Automatic dialing from caller ID memory supports only 7 digits

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Price, Great Phone, December 6, 1999
By Vtech owner (Peoria, IL) - See all my reviews
I purchased this same phone except in a "see thru" grey model and have found the phone to be excellent. It is solid, the storage and caller ID features work very well, and I can go all the way around my large yard without cut-out or interference. Although it is a bit bulky for shoulder use, the included headset works well and i don't use the shoulder move anyway,(bad for the neck.) The best thing about the phone is that it is solid, I have 3 little ones and I feel this phone can take the abuse of falling on the floor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Clarity I've Ever Heard; Zero Interference; Good Value., October 8, 1999
By PRP (Kansas City) - See all my reviews
I bought this phone because my other non-digital cordless phone was interfering with our baby monitor. The 900MHz transmission is superior to any other phone I've ever heard, digital or otherwise, and this particular phone is priced at the level most non-digital cordless phones. It's manufactured list price was over $200 when it was first released; so, with the rebate offer the Vtech 1920 is less than a quarter its regular purchase price.

After using the 1920 for a couple of weeks I liked it so much I purchased another for the office. There we have multiple cordless phones and we move around the building with our phones in hand. I've never had a problem with interference or cut-out. I've gone all the way outside the building into a back alley before the thing stopped transmitting, so being realistic about its capabilities, I'd say that's more than satisfactory.

The design is simple and sleek. The base unit is unobtrusive. The handset unit looks as if it is fashioned after most smaller cellular type phones, very straight and a broad gripping area for holding it in your hand.

It has volume control built into the side of the handset so that if someone is shouting at the other end you can lower volume without missing the conversation. It has various ringer settings that allow you to control tone/pitch of the ring. This is nice to have when you want more quiet time around the house.

Drawbacks are few from my perspective. I did experience the sensation of hitting a punchkey when talking to someone -- at first, but then I learned that this thing isn't like the older phones that required a person to have the receiver right on the ear and mouthpiece IN your mouth; again, it's a lot like a cellular in that regard. Just back-off the handset.

I've never had problems the handset since. It just takes a hand to hold it (not a shoulder-- that's difficult because it is so flat of a design).

Finally, at work I have the base unit hung on the wall near my desk and I do find it difficult to cradle its handset onto the charger once in a while. No problem if you're taking your time.

The battery life I haven't tested but so far so good.

Great Product

2.0 out of 5 stars Horrible echo...., November 25, 1999
I recently purchased the vt-1920c from another online retailer. After receiving the phone, we hooked it up to replace our older v-tech 912 analog 900MHz (it has no caller id, which is why we go the 1920). Unfortunately, the older analog phone sounded better (less echo, more incoming voice volume). We sent back the 1920. The only reason I gave the 1920 2 stars is because of its good feature set.
