5.0 out of 5 stars Calliope Music. Niiiice., October 4, 2001
By "aclboston" (Roslindale, MA United States) - See all my reviews
This is the happiest album of all time. Many have complained that it drives them nuts, but it puts me, instantly, into a gleeful happy state. It's like riding a carousel for an hour.

5.0 out of 5 stars delightful, August 23, 2008
By Jack L. Tofari (Baoding, Hebei, China) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I found this to be a delightful collection of typical circus/carnival music. The instrument seems to be run on air, common with calliopes. For this reason you will not hear the ocassional off key screech, burrble or hoot caused by water carried over from a steam boiler. This calliope, while obviously a calliope, has a tonal quality that I find simply delightful.

For one, the instrument has several octaves and each octave seems to have qualities within qualities. The lower notes, for instance, are sometimes used to give a steamboat whistle or a somber mornful effect. The upper notes are sometimes played with a short, quick timing that gives a sound resembling bells. The timing I find to be also unique. This is an automatic calliope which means that it's probably controlled by a paper piano roll. Most of the "automatic" instruments I've listened played with no feeling. Not this instrument. It makes me wonder what the paper roll looked like to produce the notes you hear. The Field Artillery March, for instance, produces a whaa-whaa sound indicating that the valves are being opened slowly. This is a great contrast to the short, clipped notes of Dixie.

The arrangements are also interesting. The tunes are not simply different tunes played the same old way each time. Each tune is individualized.

Although my favorite music is classical this CD immediately became one of my favorites. It is, plain and simple, happy music.
