Amazon.com Review
The Sims has much in common with Tony Hawk's Pro Skater: There's a great emphasis trial and error, it encourages personalized solutions to problems, and overall success comes down to both balance and timing. Also, like the Tony Hawk games, The Sims is a very addictive game.

Players micromanage the lives of a family of virtual people and influence the outcome of their lives, be it success or something akin to a nervous breakdown. The bestselling PC version of the game has, in recent years, been upgraded with elements like parties, pets, and vacations, but this iteration is closer to the basic formula.

You start the game living with Mom in a one-story suburban house. You are immediately presented with certain life tasks, such as fixing the TV and making lunch, which are aligned with the skills you'll need for the game's main challenge--keeping your sims in balance on eight conflicting categories. For example, eating will have an impact on your sim's hunger rating, but it will also impact his bladder rating. You'll have to make sure that he keeps himself and the house clean, that he sleeps to restore his energy, and that he also has time to keep himself entertained. The free will option lets your sims coast a bit, and you can also save time by stacking tasks together. Time passes at the rate of about one minute per second in the game, but you can fast-forward sim time when you need to, such as when they're sleeping.

The controls are justifiably complex, but adjusting to them is not difficult. You see your sims from an overhead perspective that you can both rotate and zoom. You direct their actions by moving a line cursor to where you want them to go or to what object or person with which you want them to interact.

The game is surprisingly funny. Neglect your sims and they'll shout and wave their arms to get your attention. Allow one's energy to get too low and he or she will likely collapse and sleep right where they were standing. When that happens, Mom is likely to serve them dinner on the floor.

Gamers may find that it takes a while to get the hang of The Sims' style and control scheme. Stick with it and you may find real time fast-forwarding by. --Porter B. Hall --The text of this review refers to the PlayStation2 version of the game.

Pros:

  • Interesting, open-ended gameplay
  • Lots of quirky humor
  • Two-player split-screen option
Cons:
  • Can be frustrating for those unfamiliar with strategy games
  • Controls take some getting used to
  • Long save times

5.0 out of 5 stars If You Buy it You'll Like It!, February 11, 2003
This Game, I don't think is like any other game I have or will ever play! This game let's you control a little person called a Sim and you can do what ever you want with them. You have to keep them happy by telling them to use the bathroom (or else they will pee on themselves) or keeping there energy high by making them go to bed! You tell them what to do and this game let's you do stuff you can only dream about! Like calling a maid to come and clean your house that you built and then hook up with her. Or calling some people over and going and hanging out in your jacuzzi! Or if a robber comes you have to call the police and get them to stop the thief. This game is like no other, and is in a category of it's own! If you have played The Sims for the PC and if you have a gamecube,PS2,or X-box then you need to buy this it is 10 times better than the PC version. And if you haven't ever played it then buy it! Like my title says "If you buy it you will like it"! I can not say enough about The Sims for Gamecube. This Game will keep you busy for hours!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Glory of The Sims Continues, June 1, 2003
A Kid's Review
The Sims for Gamecube is awesome. The gameplay is great, the graphics are unbelievable, and overall this is a great game:

Graphics:9.5/10
The graphics are totally sweet. the -.5 is because you can't zoom in too close and thats a real bummer. But other than that, everything looks real and will blow you away.

Storyline:8.5/10
The storyline is simple. On Get a Life, you create your own Sim, start off in your moms house and you have to accomplish goals in order to move to the next, goals such as move ou of moms house, get a job, get rich, etc. On Play the Sims, you have to accomplish 1 goal in Get a Life and you can play the freestyle Sims.

Controls: 10/10
The controls are really easy. All you have to do is move the cursor, click on an object, say what you want to do with the object, and your Sim goes and does it. As simple as that.

Music:6/10
The music to the Sims is kinda dorky. Its like old classical music with a new twist. Its ok, but it gets annoying after a while.

fun: 10/10
With the Sims, you can keep yourself entertained for hours. You can also play with a two player mode and live with the person your playing with .... Also with all the people, equipment, and accessories, your Sim will be as entertained as you will be.

Overall: 9.5/10
This game is the real deal. So much fun by yourself or two player mode. Dont rent this game because your not gonna want to take it back. An instant classic and an instant buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's Time To Be God On Your GameCube, October 12, 2003
I was a big fan of the game for the PC. I bought the original one and some expansion packs, until I stopped playing in the PC and decided to play only on my GCN. When I heard one of my favorite PC games was going to arrive to the GameCube, I just went and bought it myself. So how was it? Just check it out:
- Graphics: The graphics are OK, but they're really far from getting it all that the GameCube can offer to its players, graphically speaking. The major problem in here is that you can get as close as you wanted to with the C-Stick. So you can't really see sims' faces with detail, because the camera is kind of far from the sims.
- Sound: The only songs avaliable in this game are almost the same from the original, which are very enjoyable classical tunes. The sounds from the electronic furniture can get you pissed off easily. The voice acting, even though understandable, is highly enjoyable, you can really feel what the sims are feeling, just by the way their voices sound. The dialogue sounds are almost the same from the PC version.
- Fun: The Sims is highly entertaining, eveybody knows it, since it's one of the top-seller videogames in the world. Almost everybody likes to be God, almost everybody loves The Sims. The game follows the same formula from the PC version, but it's not that good. Mainly because of the controls which are really complicated, even though you can get them after a little while. But it's still bad to have such complicated controls.
- Educative: The game is rated T for Teen but you can get for your kids without worry. I don't know why they call two sims making noises in a bed "Mature Sexual Themes". I mean, the game is totally clean, you can get the game for your kids without worry.
Overall, if you were a fan of the original PC game, buy it without worrying yourselves, it's a great game.
