Grade 8 UpAA partly annotated catalog of specialized commercial enterprises, planetariums, local and national clubs, observatories, and other space-related organizations. Entries include street and e-mail addresses; a contact person; a description, in varying degrees of detail, of the programs, products, or services offered; and a map, emblem, or small black-and-white photo. This book is difficult to use. The "Master Index" is largely topical, with publications listed under "Journals" or "Newsletters" but not separately; likewise for "Observatories," "Museum," and "Events." Kope provides no fewer than four independent geographical indexes and lists businesses (only about 80), organizations, National Space Society chapters, and places of interest separately. While this book may prove helpful to teachers looking for sources for supplies, for vacation planners, or for amateur astronomers in search of nearby kindred spirits, it will be of limited use to libraries with access to Internet white and yellow pages. Poorly organized and likely to date rapidly, it is, at best, a supplementary purchase.AJohn Peters, New York Public Library

The first in a new topical reference series that the publisher compares to the "For Dummies" guides, though with a product rather than a how-to focus, this work lists space and astronomy-related products, services, organizations, and places of interest. (Kope is editor of the entire series.) Arranged in five chapters, short entries describe various products and services ranging from telescope manufacturers to dealers of space memorabilia. The Places of Interest section provides listings for planetariums in the United States and Canada as well as space-related museums, while the Organizations section details space interest groups and astronomical clubs. In addition, several appendixes list information on NASA field centers and NASA-supplied teacher resources. Throughout, E-mail and web page addresses are given whenever available along with more traditional addresses.
