Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Dear Readers, Here is my response to criticisms posted in the Amazon.com review section:

Kelly G. is spreading misinformation when she claims I have no scientific references in my book. The book's bibliography contains references to many scientific textbooks, including exercise physiology textbooks, nutrition texts, and to the works of other health experts. I am currently a research assistant in the eating disorders clinic at the Homewood Health Centre, Guelph, Ontario, Canada. I also hold an MBA and graduated with distinction from Wilfrid Laurier University with a BA in psychology. I do not see any academic or scientific credentials posted under Kelly's name.

Kelly is confused if she thinks I suggested that high reps build strength. High reps may be employed as part of a mass-building routine to increase intensity and blood flow into a muscle by performing a greater volume of work in less time.

As far as the book being a waste of money, I have a no-risk offer to refund customer's money if they can present a quicker, easier, safer, less expensive method to measure and manage body fat without restricted foods, unbalanced diets, drugs, supplements, surgery or strenuous exercise. So far, no one has challenged my offer!

Finally, when comparing another body composition analysis method to the method used in my book, it doesn't take a genius to know that results should be compared as close as possible in time, and on the same day...not 2 weeks apart! All methods have built-in error, and getting different readings when comparing several methods is not unusual. However, the important thing is to use one method consistently to note changes in body composition. The easy-to-use and inexpensive method in my book, based on anthropometric formulas developed by scientists Wilmore and Benke, has been found reasonably accurate by the YMCA.

Ron Brown

1.0 out of 5 stars Body Composition calculator very inaccurate., April 26, 1999
By A Customer
Just two weeks ago, I was hydrostatically weighed at the Universtiy of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the Human Performance Laboratory. My body fat percentage was measured to be 6.7%. Just today, I used Ron Brown's Body Composition Calculator which estimated my body fat percentage at over 14%! I think I could definitely estimate a person's body composition much more accurately just by looking at them. This book is most likely quackery and a get-rich deal for Mr. Ron Brown.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!, April 26, 2002
By A Customer
There are so many better books out there on health and fitness, don't bother with this one. I just had my body fat done and the charts in the book are completely wrong. Also, 3/4 of the book is charts. The remaining 1/4 is just the most general fitness info you could find anywhere. probably on the back of a Special K box.

1.0 out of 5 stars Useless, July 31, 2002
As a personal trainer and aerobics instructor for 15 years, I was very upset by all the incorrect, non-scientific and misleading information. Obviously the authour has very limited knowledge of the subject matter. He has based his theories on personal experience and anecdotal evidence-not research. He does not site references nor does he offer any scientic support for his OPINION. Reader beware of any diet or exercise book that does not site references! Most of his recommendations are down right wrong...amount of calories, intensity of aerobic exercise, high very-very high reps for strength training(shows his lack of knowledge of exercise physiology).
