In one of my recent workshops, I was suggesting to participants that it is important for them to replace negative messages about themselves in their daily thinking. I suggested, instead, "believable affirmations", positive but not outlandish statements, such as "I know how to learn, and I can learn to fix this problem". Some of the participants, retirement age people, came to me during break and told me they had been taught from childhood that positive self-talk is vain, and that they were having a hard time overcoming that training. I remember some similar concerns from my own childhood, that you couldn't compliment people "too much", or they'd get a "big head". I'm thinking of writing about this issue, and wondered how widespread it is. Any familiarity with this problem?
