I have no idea why the only reviewer (before me) gave this book a one star rating. Perhaps he was confused because it is not intended to explain discrete mathematics, rather it's intended to be a companion to a traditional discrete mathematics textbook. As a source of hundreds of solved problems it is absolutely invaluable. If you want extra practice or the examples in your class's textbook aren't enough, buy this.

The problems in this book were arranged the way that leads readers understand simple concepts first, then bring you to problems and applications. In addtion, my professor Dr. Mott (he wrote one of the top selling discrete book) recommanded this book to me as well. I found it VERY helpful.
Yes, I think it servers as an aid to textbooks. You cannot teach yourself discrete math by reading it.
By the way, it doesn't have alot Hamiltionian cycle examples in there.

This book is more than just a bunch of math problems with answers. It is also instructive. Within each topic, the questions progress so as to build up your ability to handle more complex problems. Some sections begin with brief definitions. Some present theorems or lemmas, following by the proofs. I needed to prepare for an doctoral prelim. exam in discrete mathematics. This book, along with Schaum's Easy Outline: Discrete Mathematics, got me through.

There are more than a few reviewers who miss the point: this is not a primary teaching text, it is a supplement. That said, you can learn a lot about the topic by reading this book first and solving the problems.

My chief concern is NOT the place that this book fills in the curriculum, rather, it is the large number of errors in the answers. I'm half way through and this book, along that dimension, has fundamentally lost my trust. Many people complain about multiple-edition books, but that probably allows the publisher to get the bugs out. Not so for this text, which is quite old.

I do NOT recommend its purchase. Buy a book without the bugs.

This is seems much like a high school reference than a college level textbook. If you are looking for answers to challenging problems look elsewhere such as proofs on induction, well ordering, proofs by contradiction, contraposition, please look elsewhere.

This book is good for going over some of the basic concepts of discrete mathematics, but does not challenge you, nor integrate many of the problems, which is what you would encounter in most college level discrete mathematics.

I purchased a few Discrete Mathematics textbooks and study aides because my assigned one (Goodaire and Parmenter 3e) was, quite frankly, incomprehensible. I have in addition to the one I mentioned the Rosen and the Epp, both of which are much better, though none of them are light reading.

I also purchased several study aids for kindle such as Discrete Mathematics Demystified, 2000 solved problems in Discrete Mathematics and Math for Computer Applications. I also bought the significantly less popular textbook by Babu Ram, which I'm finding to be the easiest textbook to read out of the four textbooks

Of the study aids I found 2000 Solved problems the most useful (oftentimes textbooks kind of leave you hanging for problem sets), followed by Math for Computer Applications. I think you should buy a print version of the latter though as the kindle version frequently cuts off graphs on the right and the conversion to digital is occasionally dodgy. The 2000 Solved problems also has this, but much, much less often, so I'd still recommend the digital of that.

Highly recommended for all Discrete Mathematics students.

great book. I like the fact that a lot of problems are solved, to show you how to work on the next problem. I love it.
