Some staggeringly beautiful pieces of writing here. Simple poignant personal stories. A real discovery and a window into a past that really has shaped modern gay culture.

A Boston gay resource center decided to have a meeting for and about HIV-negative gay men. They thought a small circle would show up and instead a huge crowd did. This book describes the many feelings that HIV-negative gay men have when many of their peers have HIV or have died from it. This may really be relevant to individuals in that situation.

Indeed, the book has good intentions, but it is dated at this point. Around 1996, after this book was published, improved AIDS drugs came on the market and greatly extended the lives of HIV-positive persons. So many new questions have arisen now that some Americans are LIVING WITH the virus, rather than DYING DUE to it. Also, the HIV-population is changing both within the gay male community and outside of it. This book doesn't mention Africa. It has few, if any, narratives from gay men of color. It was published before the rise of articles on "the down low." This new decade has changed the trajectories of HIV and this book may reflect a past era.

In fairness, I think a college student could read the handful of books on HIV-negative gay men and write a great paper analyzing them.
