From the book's preface: Pope Robertson became interested in Border Collies in 1960. He bought his first dog that year, an untrained year old pup named Lash. In 1961 Lash failed to qualify in National Competition; however he was back the next year to place third in the finals. In 1963 Lash won the Kentucky Bluegrass National Open Championship. He was the first American bred and trained dog to win this title. Pope has also trained man other dogs, both for public and dogs of his own breeding, that are at work on the ranches, dairies, and even in trial work. Pope loves a good dog and would like to see everyone have one. He has long wanted to write a book which would help the beginner. And with the encouragement of his wife, Betty and the sometimes "not so gentle" proding from me he gives you the benefit of his years of experience, in the hope that the usefulness of the Border Collie in this country will be illuminated and enhanced.

A Little Gem

This book is small, only 78 pages, but there is not a word wasted. All the information needed to train a stock dog is in it.
Mr. Robertson takes the new handler from no training experience to ready to start stock dog trials. While the book's photographs are of Border Collies it is quite usable for other working breeds. Little mention is made of the breed being trained, only how to train. Mr. Robertson stresses a quiet, controlled teamwork approach to training and working. It is small enough to take to the field to review during training sessions (a distinct advantage in my case).
If you can only afford one book to train your stock dog, this one is it. If you can afford more, this book should be included in your library. It is truly a gem.
