I am a long retired teacher and supervisor of mathematics. In addition to having taught math for many years, I have also written and published materials covering the same subject. I am now using this book with an eight year-old math whiz and find it valuable to introduce him to rapid calculation and then an analysis of why it works (largely based on our place-value system of numbers. The various methods are interesting but most of them are not very practical for everyday calculation since most are special cases rather than general applications. For successful use they also require instant recall of the basic number facts and there is no hint as to how this can be accomplished. Barring that prior requirement not many math phobes will become highly skilled arithmeticians in 30 days using this or any other book.

I read this book about once a year. It turns arithmatic inside-out, showing quick tricks to do calculations in your head, or ways to transpose number problems to view them in new ways that make them easier to solve. For example, using the power of reciprocals, multiplying by 5 is equivalent to dividing by 2 and moving the decimal point to the right spot through a test of reasonableness. I apply many of the tips in this book regulaly in my job during the day, and the more times I review the book the more they've become intuitive. I highly recommend for anyone interested in math or numbers, or deals regularly with simple math problems.

This book has some very cool tricks. It really helps out a lot on tests. It is fun to show my dad them (he is really interested in math). In math class we are reading this book and doing the problems. I don't see how Mr. Julius figured out these tricks. You should get this book!

This book enables one to calculate many difficult arithmetic problems using only your brain and a repertoire of handy tricks. Training is over thirty days (one topic per day) although multiple tricks can be done per day. Proofs of methodology is not the focus (e.g. finding a fifth root in seconds), memorising and applying the tricks is.

A simple process template is usually applied to each problem:

*Select relevant trick/s.
*Ignore decimals.
*Apply trick.
*Use a ‘Test of Reasonableness’ to correct for any decimals.

Voila!

This really is practical and by positive feedback after each set of exercises, and encouraging comments from the author, will spur the reader to finish every trick. One weakness would be a rote memory approach, so when confronted with a different problem a student may be left floundering.
To get the most out the book the reader should prove each of the techniques using basic algebra.

The book is a great complement to others in this genre.

If you master this book, you will realize that these are not tricks. You use this logic all the time but never realize you are doing it. Using this book, you verify what you are doing and maybe we can teach an old... O.K. I mean it is possible to pick u some new skills. There are examples, drills and most important though processes.

The only drawback to this book is that with the advent of cheap prolific calculators, there is no need for archaic fractions in our dismal oriented world.

This may not be the be-all-end-all on the subject but I found it helpful from the grocery store to the IRS.

This book is so great for all ages, not just for students still at school. Faster mental calculation, simple tricks but very useful in daily life and the way writer Julius presents it really leads readers to the wonderful world of math in a sense. My kids (8th grader and 3rd one) devour the book at once and take turn to do ALL exercises, this fact alone proves that Mr. Julius already successful to challenge the readers to explore, to see not only the beauty of math but its application in life. Needless to say, I go through the whole book cover to cover with excitement like a student still in school. Kudos to this great book!

I love this book! Well... At least parts of it. But those parts are enough to give it a five star rating. You will learn quite a few tricks that will speed up you head calculations enormously. However, they only applies to certain calculations, so while you sometimes will impress your friends and colleagues, you will still find problems that takes as long as before.
