Although this book was published in 1990, and the issue of AIDS was a very real concern for me at the time (a dear friend had died from it just a year before, and we had already dedicated a panel for him for the Quilt), for some reason I did not encounter it at the time. However, this year during the annual AIDS Day remembrances, Kittredge Cherry, author of my beloved "Jesus in Love" novels, referenced the essay she and Jim Mitulski had submitted to the collection. It is Chapter 11 of the compilation, and is titled, "We Are the Church Alive". This and the other essays, both theological and practical, are extremely well presented.

This book is fascinating because it does indeed document what I believe to be the "turning point" in the attitude of "Mainline Christianity" towards the entire issue of the theology of acceptance of homosexuality. I believe this effort on the part of the National Council of Churches to seriously confront the gospel mandate to apply the compassion of Christ to the AIDS epidemic opened the door to new inclusiveness, and a rethinking of the approach to understanding the Divine perspective on human sexuality.

For me, the book is an important reminder of "where we've been" as well as a motivation to maintain focus. Just as Jews are continually admonished to "Never forget!" the Holocaust, so we as Christians should not forget the appalling loss of so many lives and destruction of so many relationships because of the stigma attached to AIDS as the "Gay Plague", a stigma that led to the horrifying epidemic. However, once the various Christian churches really did begin to honestly apply Christ's mandate to minister to the sick and comfort the dying, and once the deaths from AIDS became so epidemic that closet doors no longer sufficed to hide the presence of gay people in every level of both church and society, the necessary sea change did in fact occur. It is valuable to have this so clearly documented in an excellent series of essays.
