Format: Hardcover
An insightful, well organized, and superlatively illustrated basic text book in microbial life (Dusenbery includes some more complex forms, using size as a determinant). Written for the science literate layperson, it presents, among many other things, a view of the physical universe of microbial life that had, for me, more than a few "ah, ha's!" My son, a high school junior, also read and appreciated it. I found it in the local library and liked it so much, I'm buying it at Amazon.com and just stopped here to offer this very positive review.

An excellent, well-written overview of how things like microbes or pollen manage to do what they do. The author manages to include a good deal of depth and did research on some of these same topics himself over many years.

He begins with a short history of research into single-celled organisms, then progresses to how they move around in a world where the viscosity of water makes for a real problem; how seeds get themselves distributed by the wind (or, in the case of some fungi, getting shot into the air). In a world where sound and sight are impossible, they depend on chemicals to sense food, to avoid danger and even to poison dangerous things. They communicate with each other in some surprising ways. And, to a limited extent, even learn.

Throughout the book there are many photos, diagrams, tables, and it's followed by a bibliography.

Very well done indeed.

Easy to read discussion of various topics concerning prokaryotic and eukaryotic unicellular life, although multicellular fungi and learning in simple invertebrates are also considered.
