This is a kit from the 'Build With Beakman' series. It consists of; five petri dishes, five cotton swabs, two packets of Knox unflavored gelatine (with recipes on the back of them), a box with five pre-punched out holes, a book, and a small cardboard stand/image of Lester, Beakman and Josie, and a cover sheet. Besides the illustrations and text, the book has images of the actors and penguin puppets with speech balloons, with helpful information, or silly comments. The book's introduction tells the reader that they will be introduced to the "microscopic world of bacteria" (page 3). It also gives the standard warning from the television, about children doing the experiments with adults, and that the packaging box will be useful to hold the petri dishes. The book begins by discussing germs, and such things as fungi, and microbes. It then shows how a virus duplicates itself within cells. (These illustrations of the virus invading a cell were also slightly redrawn for the book "Beakman's Book of Dead Guys and Gals in Science" (page 30), which seems to have been released at about the same month as this book.) It then describes some common forms of bacteria, how small they are, and how long they've been around. It then lists the items in the kit, and mentions the inventor of the petri dish. It then tells the reader how to cook the gelatine to create a culture, and that other things not included with the kit will be needed, such as a cooking pan, sugar, tape, and even using a magnifying glass to look at the results.

It then describes a culture, gelatin and proteins, and were various forms of bacteria can be found. Details are given on how to collect the bacteria, how to place them into the the dishes, and how not to contaminate the the cultures.
