I had to read this novel full of short stories for a Chicano literature class, and while I found myself feeling a bit uncomfortable at times, my professor's brilliant lectures helped put these short stories into context. Otherwise, I might have missed the opportunity to really read into the character's backgrounds and really empathize with them, which is essential for reading into characters. I would love for someone to make a play on the different characters (the characters are all different, even if they share the name "Reynaldo," which I didn't get at first) in this collection.

Some parts are very graphic, especially sexually, but it was for a reason, mostly I felt to illustrate the place of subordination many Latinos find themselves in when being with white men; if on one level they are isolated from one culture due to their sexual identity, they are also marginalized and belittled by white men due to their ethnicity and heritage. It was heart wrenching for me to read the tales of some of the more self-destructive characters, which seemed to respond to society's loathing and disregard for their being with self-destructive and dangerous ways (promiscuity, abusive relationships, drugs, alcohol, etc.). There were other tales having to do with the transcendence of one's body (as in those who have Aids), and the uprooting of a family history for a more truthful narrative.

The tales range from coming of age tales that are starkly realistic and concrete, maybe harsh, like those written by Hemingway, to the superstitious and beautifully symbolic.

It saddens me that the author, like so many gay writers and artists, died at a young age.

A beautiful first effort from Cuadros, who died shortly before the book was published. Poems and short stories. He writes with anger and nostalgia about growing up in California, learning who his friends were, discovering himself as a gay man, wrestling with AIDS, and keeping people close. A tough book to read, but worth it.
