Comment: This book has already been loved by someone else. It MIGHT have some wear and tear on the edges, have some markings in it, or be an ex-library book. Over-all itâ€TMs still a good book at a great price! (if it is supposed to contain a CD or access code, that may be missing)

Retriever Puppy Training: The Right Start For Hunting by canine training experts Clarice Rutherford and Cherylon Loveland is a superbly organized and presented instructional guide to the art and science of training a hunting dog. From selecting the right puppy, to identifying and working with your puppy's personality traits, to solidly adhering to a chosen training program, Retriever Puppy Training is an excellent, concise, no-nonsense, "user friendly" reference to helping a young, eager-to-please puppy become the best hunting dog it can be.

This book covers all the steps in teaching a puppy the basics of retriever training. There are no stories or tall tales to fill in the gaps like in the Water Dog book. This is all straight forward retriever training. I recommend this book to everyone I meet that is wanting to learn how to train a dog to retrieve. The authors have added drills to work on after teaching certain stages and I feel these are very helpful. Also, there are check list after some steps and chapters that let me know if my dog and I are doing that particular step correctly. I've never read another book on retriever training that has as much information in it as this one.

The first half of the book is everything from choosing a puppy to house training your puppy. The second half is the beginning training of retrieving. A must especially for first time retriever puppy owners. Everyone of my puppies goes to their new home with a copy.

While I don't agree with some of their training techniques (stinging your pup with a slingshot??) there is good information here and the section on puppy personalities is worth the price of admission. I have trained 3 other labs using the Wolters technique and while my dogs have never been "robots" they have all been impressive hunters and family members. With my new pup I am sticking with Wolters but implementing some of the ideas from this book, Tom Dokken and Bill Hillmann.

This book has a lot of great information covering everything from selecting a dog to the first training steps all the way through advanced field/hunt exercises. I would recommend it for anyone, the first half is useful for all retriever owners, and the 2nd half is great for more specialized training.

My fiance and I have adopted a Novia Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, whom we will train to hunt ducks and dove. This is the perfect book for first-time owners who plan to train their dog for strict obedience and retrieving. The book is fairly thin; it breaks things down to the nitty-gritty.

This is a good book for both the first time dog owner or a old timer like me. I like the step by step format and list of equipment needed for each step. The book also contains a number of step on how to correct mistakes.
