Through an examination of animal rights publicity and fundraising campaigns, the authors document the threat that animal rights poses to traditional humane uses of animals. They clearly show the distinction between traditional animal welfare organizations, which seek to improve the treatment of animals, and animal rights organizations, which seek to end the use and ownership of animals -- no farm animals for food, no zoos and circuses, no animals in biomedical research even if it may help to save human lives, etc., etc. They also show how a good many longstanding humane organizations have been hijacked -- taken over -- by animal rights advocates. This should serve as a wake-up call to animal lovers who want their charitable contributions to improve the treatment of animals, not end the use of animals. If you give to organizations that profess to be concerned about animals, this book offers valuable guidance to ensure that your contributions reach groups that are actually working to improve animal treatment, not to end animal use.

Although this book was published in the early nineties, the information and history in this book serve to expose an ugly, destructive underbelly of the warm and fuzzy feel-good message of the animal rights movement. In the ten-plus years since this book was written, evidence has come into public view regarding animal rights extremist groups killing huge numbers of healthy dogs and importing unhealthy dogs into the country, the latter of which has exposed our pets to new and deadly strains of rabies, and more. I give it five stars for being innovative, but I would like to see this book revised and updated with information for readers who want to do more for our pets than read a book.

This is an important book that exposes the animal rights movement for what it really is! Everyone who thinks that PETA and HSUS are organizations that actually do good for animals needs to read this and think about where their money is really going.

This book documents the take-over of humane organizations by the animal rights movement. It exposes the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) for what it is, a very well disguised animal rights organization that is masquerading as an animal welfare organization. The goal of the animal rights movement is the COMPLETE ELIMINATION OF ALL DOMESTIC ANIMALS. You read this correctly, they don't want you to have a dog or cat or horse or any animal, period. The underhanded attacks on number of animals you can own, if you are allowed to breed your animals and even the breed of dog you are allowed to own are just the beginning of the campaign to wipe out animal ownership. If you love your dog, you MUST read this book, take its lessons to heart, and get active!

This is an intriguing, well written book, which assembles in one place topics of great interest to anyone who breeds, exhibits, or trains dogs. The Strands have placed the animal rights movement in historical and philosophical perspective. Links between more "credible" AR organizations and those that are recognized terrorist organizations (under surveillance by the FBI) are explored. Tactics whereby more reputable organizations are infiltrated and turned into AR activist groups are documented. The importation of violent activism from the UK to the US is detailed. There are many interesting and sobering points made in this book and it is worth reading.

When reading the other reviews of this book, I was surprised at the venomous reviews from animal rights "types". This is a very controversial topic, true, but I believe it is important for all real animal lovers to read about the extremist animal rights groups. These groups do nothing for animals, and this book does an excellent job of exposing their anti-animal and human agenda!
