Editorial Reviews

Product Description

This is the first computer organization text aimed specifically at computer science students (as opposed to books which are for CS/EE/and Computer Engineering). It has a "topdown" approach meaning the author starts with the software or user aspects of the organization then explains how to make it work. This is versus "bottom-up," wherein the student sees logic gates, circuits, etc., all of which are built up to user level.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great overview of the topic!, October 18, 1999
By A Customer
This was one of my favorite textbooks when I was working on my BSCS degree. The author takes the opposite approach from that used in most computer organization/architecture texts. He starts with what the student already knows -- high-level programming languages -- and works his way down through assembly language, machine language, binary arithmetic, logical operations performed at the CPU level, and digital circuits. In later parts of the book, he treats the computer as a whole system, giving the reader a wider perspective. He then goes into "alternative" computing models, including RISC and parallel computing. For a textbook, this book was a very enjoyable read.
