Product Description
Expert guidance on exploring and choosing a professional career

Ideal for college-bound students or anyone thinking about making a career change, the VGM Professional Careers series offers all the information career seekers need to explore and choose a profession and then narrow it down to a job that suits them. Each book details the responsibilities, education and training required, and employment outlooks for dozens of careers in the field.

From the Back Cover
VGM's Careers in Engineering

The different types of engineering fields are as numerous and diverse as the skill and knowledge base of engineering professionals. Building bridges requires structural engineering knowledge; automobile design needs mechanical engineers; and communications technicians must be trained in electrical engineering. Today, computers and artificial intelligence aid engineers in performing many tasks, thereby increasing design efficiency, safety, and overall effectiveness; however, there continues to be a need for talented engineers in every corner of the industry.

The field of engineering is a world where design, mechanics, and craftsmanship can be invented, brought together, and honed to create something as small as a computer chip or as large as a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, from a simple time-lock mechanism to the complexities of the space shuttle. Engineering is a field in which imagination meets reality. Those working in it reap immense satisfaction and accomplishment from their profession.

Inside, you will find up-to-date salary statistics and descriptions of the work culture that paint a comprehensive picture of what to expect on the job. Careers in Engineering also includes advice on where and how to fulfill educational requirements as well as the names and addresses of professional organizations for further information--everything you need to enter the exciting field of engineering!

2.0 out of 5 stars not much information, February 25, 2005
By Fish (Houston, TX) - See all my reviews
i bought this book thinking it would give me more information than what i could find on the internet. however, there wasn't really anything in here that i hadn't already read.

also, the salary information in the mechanical engineering section seems very low, at least compared to other things i've read, as well i've engineers i've talked to.

if you really want to learn more about engineering as a career (or any job for that matter), visit this website: http://www.bls.gov/search/ooh.asp?ct=OOH. the author even refers to this site in the book. the book itself basically repeats and summarizes stuff from the website, but leaves out a lot of more important material.

4.0 out of 5 stars Poorly written, but informative., June 1, 2003
By A Customer
I found the author's writing style to be a bit too ambiguous and obscure for my tastes: this book is definitely not written in layman's terms. But then again, anyone entering the engineering field will probably end up reading a great deal of content such as this. Overall, I think this book is worth its meager price, for the sheer amount of information.
