Editorial Reviews

Review

"...full of data and generously sprinkled with color photographs and illustrations, this book offers a well-thought-out overview of the animal kingdom." -- Joan Garner in Academic Reference Books Annual, 1999

"...this book could hardly fail to please the budding mammal enthusiast." -- Cara Ann Morgan in Mammals News

"Gould and McKay do not attempt a comprehensive list of species of mammal but concentrate on evolution, diet, habitat, physiology, reproduction, and behavior, using selected examples. After introductory chapters, each order of mammals is presented clearly and consistently in signed authoritative articles. For all college, high school, and community libraries." -- Choice

"High-school, public, and academic libraries needing to fill out their collections on animals will want to consider one or more of these attractive and affordable books."
--BOOKLIST (March 1999)
"Packed full of data and generously sprinkled with color photographs and illustrations, this book offers a well-thought-out overview of the animal (mammal) kingdom. The 232 oversized pages of information and pictures make this a wonderfully rich resource for elementary, middle, and high school students (although the higher grades may find the data somewhat sparse). It is an ideal book for both public and school libraries that will be found and used often."
--Joan Garner in ACADEMIC REFERENCE BOOKS ANNUAL (1999)
"This revised and updated book features valuable new conservation information on selected species, highlighting the three categories of threat - critically endangered, endangered, and vulnerable. The text, written in an easy to read style by a team of international experts, reflects recent discoveries in the field of mammalogy, and is enhanced by more than 200 superb photographs and over 100 paintings, diagrams and maps. This splendid book is an ideal introduction to the wonderful world of mammals."
--Christpher Lever in ZOOLOGICAL JOURNAL OF THE LINNEAN SOCIETY (1999)
"This second edition of the Encyclopedia of Mammals has a most appealing quality to it. Armed with its large glossy cover, attractive illustrations and a superb selection of photographs from top wildlife photographers, this book could hardly fail to please the budding mammal enthusiast. ...lovel present for someone with an amateur interest in wildlife."
--Cara Ann Morgan in MAMMALS NEWS
Praise for the First Edition
"An impressive list of 19 contributors... Helpful to general readers; distribution maps for the orders will be useful to students."

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference work, January 19, 2001
By A Customer
What a wonderful book! This well detailed, well researched work includes every mammal, classified by family making individual animals easy to find. Each section includes maps, a size chart, and beautiful full color pictures as well as an extensive fact section. I strongly recommend this for any school age child, as well as adults. Even my 15 month old loves it.
