Editorial Reviews

Review
This is the second in the Angel series featuring Ray Flowers, retired police inspector and now founder of his own detective agency. One of his first cases involves a girl who has run away to join a secretive religious cult, the Eyes of God. Ray is already unpleasantly familiar with the group - 11 years ago he led the inquiry into the ritual murder of three boys, and convicted of the crimes was Harrison Lee, leader of the Eyes of God. Lee has just died in prison, but on the day of his funeral a boy's body is discovered - the victim of another ritual killing. Soon it becomes apparent that Katie, a survivor of the cult, is in grave danger, and that its current members know more about Harrison Lee than they admit. This is a dark and powerful thriller with vividly drawn characters and a truly frightening backdrop, highly recommended to fans of authors such as Ian Rankin and Reginald Hill. 5.0 out of 5 stars terrific investigative thriller , November 10, 2007
Ray Flowers left to open up a security firm with his friend, George Mahoney. However, an investigation he worked on from over a decade ago has resurfaced. Three young boys were ritually killed with clues leading to the Eyes of God cult. The police arrested the leader, Harrison Lee, who was convicted of the homicides. However, not long afterward the cult's headquarters exploded with only one survivor, a little girl, Katie.

Since the explosion killed everyone she knew, Katie has been mute; her doctors insist it is psychosomatic. They are proven right when she abruptly blurts out "He's coming back", just before vanishing from her latest foster home. Soon after she disappeared, a dead young boy is discovered found at the same location and in the same repose as Lee's first victim eleven years ago. The police fear more will follow to match the previous murder spree so the authorities draft Ray to help prevent further murders of the young from occurring.

This sequel to THE ANGEL GATEWAY (not read by this reviewer) is a terrific investigative thriller that grips the audience from the moment Katie suddenly makes her frightening proclamation. The cast is solid and the story line strong. However, what turns LIKE ANGELS FALLING into a strong mystery is the audience is not sure whether the killer is Lee coming back from the grave or a copy cat with intimate knowledge from the first spree. Jane Adams provides a fabulous suspense thriller.

5.0 out of 5 stars A definite hit!, March 10, 2007
Ray Flowers has now resigned fro the police force and is partners with his friend, George Mahoney, in a security and detection business. Eleven years ago, Ray was involved in investigating the murder of three young boys and Eyes of God cult leader, Harrison Lee, was convicted of the crimes. The cult headquarters exploded and only one young girl, Katie, survived but hasn't spoken since that day. Now, suddenly, Katie proclaims "He's coming back." and runs away from the home of her foster parents back to the site of the cult. When a young boy disappears and his body is found in the same spot and position as Lee's first victim, Ray is called in to help the police. Has someone taken over where Lee left off?

Adams is very good at supernatural suspense. There is enough of each element to pull you in and keep you reading, but not so much as to be completely unbelievable. Because one can explain events either by reason or paranormal is what makes this book creepy. The tension is definitely there. The story is driven by plot, more than character, but it works because each character is strong and interesting enough to hold their own. Adams is bit hit or miss with me, but this was a definite hit.
