Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Amour and a murder make this Mississippi Delta whodunit from Haines (Crossed Bones, etc.) sure to please. Since PI Sarah Booth Delaney's most spiritual aspect is her live-in ghost, it's more than surprising when a nun hires her to help a "healer" who was raised in the sister's orphanage. Doreen Mallory, tarot card reader, charismatic teacher and object of a large following's devotion, sits in a New Orleans jail cell, accused of murdering her baby. Was it a case of "if you can't heal 'em, kill 'em," or was someone else responsible for the crime? Sarah Booth's associate Tinkie Richmond joins the hunt, and the two set off for the Crescent City, intent on finding the truth. The trail forces Sarah Booth into close quarters with Sheriff Coleman Peters, whose almost-indiscretion with the Southern belle turned detective has left them both wondering what might have been, barring Coleman's wife's first dibs on the lawman. But, par for the course, it's either feast or famine in Sarah Booth's love life, so re-enter her former flame, Hamilton Garrett. Between her own problems and delving into an impressive trio of could-be sperm donors for Doreen's daughter, a number of reasons for wanting the child dead reach the surface. The twists and turns take the reader through the labyrinth of the charming French Quarter and into the settings of high and low society. When the dots are connected, the conclusion is both clever and impressive.

From Booklist
The newly formed Delaney Detective Agency of Zinnia, Mississippi, consisting of southern belles Sarah Booth Delaney and her friend Tinkie Richmond, is hired by Sister Mary Magdalen to prove miracle worker Doreen Mallory didn't murder her infant daughter as charged. Doreen denies she placed the sleeping pills in her severely handicapped infant's bottle, so Sarah Booth and Tinkie investigate Rebekah's three possible fathers: a married politician, a well-known televangelist, and the man who handles Doreen's accounts, although all deny being the baby's father. While working on the case, Sarah Booth must also deal with two additional issues: her feelings for the married Sheriff Coleman Peters, whom she loves but whose wife has deliberately become pregnant to keep from losing him, and her concern that Tinkie may have breast cancer. Sarah Booth makes an endearing heroine, and her first-person narration draws readers close to her. Jitty, the ghost of Sarah Booth's great-great-grandmother's nanny, adds humor to this story of faith and hope, the fifth in the series. Sue O'Brien

1.0 out of 5 stars Author has a definite ax to grind., September 1, 2007
Please, Carolyn, let us know what you think about religion. I didn't quite get it in this book. Also, please give us your take on morality. Having your main character hop from bed to bed while really lusting after a married man whose wife is supposedly pregnant (I don't believe it for a moment.) My guess is that will be revealed in some later book as a ploy to get the husband to stick with her instead of running off with Sarah Booth.

The ex-slave ghost is insulting and annoying. The incest in the book is beyond belief. The idea that a U.S. senator could be married to a transsexual and the public not know about it is ridiculous.

There is no mystery to this series. Worse yet, the main character falls into the answer and does very little to figure out the crime. Seems like the writer wants a vehicle to explore sexuality rather than to be a mystery writer.

Want to read some good mystery series with a strong female character? Try Erlene Fowler's Benni series. Want a funny mystery series with likeable and believable characters? Try Donna Andrews' Meg Langslow series.

I bought this series (through Bones to Pick) on the strength of the first two books - it has gone downhill. I will read the next book (as I already purchased it) but no more after. I just can't like the characters with the exception of Tinkie. I'll guess that the author will eventually destroy her character too. It certainly looks like her marriage will be gone - the author is painting her husband Oscar with a black brush starting in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hallelujah for HALLOWED BONES!, April 22, 2004
This review is from: Hallowed Bones (Hardcover)
I love the Mississippi Delta Mysteries! They just keep getting better and better. HALLOWED BONES is my new favorite. Yes, Sarah Booth Delaney is back, doing what a Daddy's Girl should do,and, of course, what she should not do. Here she is investigating a New Age healer/guru Doreen Mallory who is accused of killing her baby girl. If Mallory didn't kill her baby, who did? Three major characters are in Delaney's line of sight: a televangelist, a senator, and Mallory's financial advisor. Her investigation not only leads her into the secrets of the past, but also she finds out some things about her partner and friend Tinkie. In order to investigate, Delaney must travel back and forth from her hometown Zinnia to New Orleans where the healer is operating. Not only is she caught between two cities, her heart is split again between two men, unhappily married Sheriff Coleman Peters and fantasy man Hamilton Garrett V. Sarah's friends, CeCe and Tinkie try to help her make a decision, but it's ultimately up to Sarah. Jitty, the sassy plantation ghost, is back to giving Sarah grief and advice. The characters of these mysteries novels are so fun and feisty; they keep me coming back for more and more. Read and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sarah Booth solves it again! , June 2, 2006
Carolyn Haines once again takes her readers on yet another ride through the wonderful Mississippi Delta and shows us there is more to being a dectective than solving a "who done it." Sarah Booth's colorful entourage of friends, CeCe and Tinkie assist Sarah as she searches the French Quarter of New Orleans for the murderer of a spiritual healer's handicapped child. In addition to solvng other people's problems Sarah has to deal with her own stress and desire in the form of Sheriff Coleman Peters (her unrequited love interest) and Hamilton Garrett (the man who just won't stay in Zinnia).
A great story with lots of twists and turns. I can't wait for the next mystery in Sarah Booth Delaney's life. Will she go with Hamilton Garrett or will she stay in Zinnia? Will Coleman finally come to his senses? Whatever the outcome, it's always a comfort to know that Sarah Booth will route out the badguy and save the day!
