Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A wealthy investment banker with a swagger like Denzel Washington learns that money can't buy love in a muted novelization of Johnson's stage play of the same name. Caleb Peterson has no trouble getting fly-ass ladies, but things never seem to work out: Kendra's after his wallet, Asia's just too sweet, and as for Miss Bud Light—well, Caleb doesn't even know her name until after they're in the buff (though he learns her 42 double-Ds are named Water and Melon). When beautiful former model Paisley Terrell enters the picture, things start to look up for Caleb, and soon enough he's giving his heart away yet again. His friends warn him not to give his cash away as well, so when Caleb makes an impromptu marriage proposal, talk of a prenup soon follows. Paisley protests, and complications, both romantic and economic, ensue. Johnson is a force in contemporary African-American theater, but without actors adding life to his words, the dialogue is stiff and the characters two-dimensional. (Apr.)

From Booklist

Johnson tries to present both sides of the story by having the lead characters, the romantic couple of Caleb and Paisley, both speak in first person in alternating chapters, which proves awkward at first. However, it does allow us to get into the heads of the characters and better know their background and motivations, an advantage over those who’ve experienced only the original stage production of this story (which is credited to Johnson and Gary Guidry). A busy plot fills the scene with people and moves them along various twists and turns, in ways entertaining if not always completely plausible. Ultimately, there is exploration of the basic question—if you’re a wealthy single man, are women approaching you coming to love you or just your money? But further, are you a man whom a woman can love or is it only your money that you can offer? --Valerie Hawkins

4.0 out of 5 stars Money Hungry?, April 20, 2009
By CHayes "Cheryl" (Bronx, NY) - See all my reviews

Men, Money & Gold Diggers by Je'Caryous Johnson is an outrageous account of Caleb Peterson's life. Caleb has some women issues and they all seem to stem back to the relationship he had with his mother. Never letting go of his abandonment issues or seeking therapy, Caleb turned the other cheek and continued on his destructive path never quite understanding why he continuously attracted gold diggers.

Meet Paisley Terrell, a woman scorned by her broke boyfriend that she stood by for years, only to learn he cheated on her and was never really willing to be everything that she wanted or needed in a man. Sitting around tired, broke and frustrated, Paisley hangs out with her friends who cannot understand why Paisley is not like them. Love `em and leave `em is their motto, get what you can and get out. When a chance meeting at a local bar between Paisley and Caleb occurs, he thinks he has found the woman of his dreams. Paisley, on the other hand does not become interested, until she reads in Fortune magazine he is one of the top richest African- American men. Paisley decides he just might be worth pursuing.

Pre-nups, ex-lovers returning to stake claim and devious women fill the pages of this crazy story of finding true love. Can Caleb break the spell he seems to be under when it comes to choosing women, or will he continue to buy women and not understand that money cannot buy love? Is Paisley really in love with Caleb or the fact that he appears to be every woman's dream? Men, Money & Gold Diggers is simply scandalous, filled with begging women, weak-minded men, and that one true friend. Mr. Johnson penned a great story. This book was a fast read and good til the last drop. I recommend Men, Money & Gold Diggers to readers of all genres who are looking for a great story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pay To Play, April 19, 2009
Caleb Peterson has the total package - a successful career, financially stable, and irresistibly gorgeous. The only thing that will make him complete is a love of his own. Unfortunately, Caleb is consistently attracting ladies who are looking for sponsorship and he is tired of the madness. He crosses paths with the beautiful Paisley Terrell, a struggling model who recently broke up with her cheating boyfriend. She's also doing what she can to keep her finances afloat, not knowing where her next dollar is coming from. As things become hot and heavy between the two, Caleb proposes to Paisley with one stipulation that could either make or break their relationship.

The play "Men, Money, & Gold Diggers" turned novel was awesome. I'm a big fan of Mr. Johnson in the theatrical arena and I was very impressed with his first book. Caleb and Paisley 's characters were well written in first person so the reader gets both points of views as well as the opinions of their friends, which I found hilarious. I love the way Caleb was portrayed and that he realizes that love has been staring him right in the face all along. "Men, Money & Gold Diggers" provides drama, plenty of laughter and how true love prevails.

5.0 out of 5 stars (4.5 Stars) An Excellent Read!, March 19, 2009
By Urban-Reviews.com (Urban-Reviews.com) - See all my reviews

Does money make the world go around? Having money can take care of you financially, but what about mentally and emotionally? Money can also be the root of all evil, and it can bring problems you could not even imagine.

Paisley Terrell is a struggling model who is fed up with men. For a year and a half, Paisley had been supporting Bobby mentally and physically, hoping his long life dream would come true. When she suspects Bobby of cheating, she gets the help of "Busted," a reality television show that catches spouses in the act of cheating. Her assumptions about Bobby are true and literally catches him in the act. Tired of broke men, Paisley vows never to put herself in that situation again. Will Paisley find her prince charming? Or will her obsession with getting a man with money cloud her judgment and make her lose an opportunity?

Caleb is a successful investment banker. Handsome, financially stable and outgoing, he brings a lot to the table. After a string of bad relationships, Caleb is tired of dealing with gold diggers and having his heart broken. But Caleb has his own issues stemming from his childhood. Sometimes love is found in the strangest places. Will Caleb find the true love he desires, or will he be blind and let it pass him by?

Bobby Trumane was not the man he said he was. Bobby's life encompasses lies, deceit, and cheating, When the "mis-truths" are brought full circle, his aspirations of becoming a sports agent come true. Will Bobby continue to live a dangerous lifestyle, or will he meet his match and be forced to come clean?

Dedra is Caleb's secretary, best friend, and confidante who is always by his side during his whirlwind of bad relationships. She's the one who gives it to him "straight no chaser." Unbeknownst to Caleb, Dedra is secretly in love with him. When a chance encounter brings those feelings to light, will love conquer all, or will skeletons emerge from the closet?

Men, Money, & Gold Diggers was an excellent read by Je'Caryous Johnson. The book addressed the male and female perspective, and it illustrated the good, bad and the ugly in relationships. Johnson showed that no matter how much money you have, it means nothing if you don't have someone who is down to ride with you and stay true. Men, Money, & Gold Diggers provided drama, an interesting storyline, and proved that there is a light at the end of the tunnel...even when you least expect it.
