Product Description
The nonprofit leader’s complete source on setting, pursuing, and meeting building campaign goals

Nonprofit veteran Stanley Weinstein’s Capital Campaigns from the Ground Up gives decision-makers the guidance they need to accomplish one of the most important steps in the growth of an organization: the campaign for funding and completing a significant building project. Whether for arts-, religious-, education-, healthcare-, preservation-, or social service—related projects, this book lays out a detailed road map for successfully managing all aspects of project realization. Moving easily from preparation to design to fundraising, Capital Campaigns from the Ground Up presents a comprehensive approach to coordinating these efforts. This practical, clearly written handbook will help you:

  • Think strategically in the early preparation stage
  • Balance building and fundraising concerns
  • Build a committed team of volunteers, a cohesive board, and a solid donor base
  • Make a strong case for support, utilize media resources, and communicate a clear mission
  • Determine what has worked in past successful campaigns

Nonprofit directors, developers, board members, and other decision-makers, along with architects and other design professionals working with nonprofits, will all appreciate and benefit from this invaluable resource.

From the Inside Flap
A capital campaign for a major building project represents a huge opportunity for the not-for-profit organization. However, embarking on such a venture can raise a daunting, even dizzying array of organizational and fundraising challenges. Managing these requires sound planning at the minimum; doing so while remaining faithful to mission requires knowledge and mastery of coordination. For those who can, though, the rewards are truly inspiring.

Capital Campaigns from the Ground Up: How Nonprofits Can Have the Buildings of Their Dreams provides decision-makers with essential tools for realizing their organization’s highest possible development hopes. Written by veteran nonprofit planner and campaigner Stanley Weinstein, this book is unique in discussing fundraising preparation in tandem with building planning. The resulting overview clearly lays out a balanced, thoughtful program for successful project development.

Starting right at the "get go," Capital Campaigns from the Ground Up covers every aspect of the campaign process, from the project’s inception to its delivery. The book begins by outlining prerequisites for attaining capital- and facility-related goals. From there, chapters contributed by architectural leaders describe how to achieve design excellence and smoothly manage the subsequent construction. Later chapters provide a detailed breakdown of the fundraising campaign, from crafting the case for support to building a volunteer team to nurturing relationships with potential donors. Special features include:

  • Photos of various successful buildings– hospitals, learning facilities, sacred spaces, arts venues, and historic sites– which also indicate the range of costs per square foot for each type of construction
  • Separate chapters devoted to the particular needs of campaigns involving faith-based institutions and historic preservation projects
  • A sample Gantt Chart, a useful planning tool illustrating multiple tasks and timelines for integrating building and fundraising planning steps
  • Other helpful outlines and checklists
  • In-depth case studies of successful campaigns

While fraught with organizational hurdles, building campaigns can be run efficiently and comprehensively. Capital Campaigns from the Ground Up will help keep nonprofit directors, developers, members of the board, architects, and other decision-makers from getting bogged down in complexities, and allow their organizations–and society–to enjoy the considerable benefits of a successfully realized capital campaign.

Capital Campaigns from the Ground Up: How Nonprofits Can Have the Buildings of their Dreams

Planning for and conducting a Capital Campaign can be a very complex, time consuming and challenging enterprise for a nonprofit organization. It can also revitalize, enhance and enable organizations to dramatically improve their overall operations and financial resource development activities way beyond the conclusion of the campaign.

Stanley Weinstein's book is a very good source for information on what it takes for a capital campaign to succeed. The main part of the book contains advice obtained from Weinstein, who was a professional fundraiser and consultant. He has many years of campaign experience, and was a former member of the national board of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. His comments on planning, board involvement, prospect identification and cultivation, as well as on volunteer and solicitor training are very good. He also has separate chapters on Churches and Faith Based Institutions as well as Historic Preservation Projects. See below for chapter listing.

One of the more significant aspects of the book, which is not found in most other publications on capital campaigns, is the chapter written by Dale Dekker, one of the contributing authors who is an architect. His input on Project Planning, Design, Construction, Furnishings, Contracting, etc. is excellent.

The book also provides very good information on the basic techniques, skills, processes, timelines and pre-requisites for a successful capital campaign. It could be an even more valuable publication if it included more examples from case experiences that demonstrate creative use of newer fundraising techniques, divisional activities, marketing and additional information on how to help potential solicitors overcome anxiety related to making the ask.

Budgeting and sequencing of the information could also be improved. It wasn't until chapter 8 that issues related to pre-campaign planning studies was reviewed.

On the plus side, the inclusion of a detailed index at the end of the book helps to make the publication a valuable reference resource.

Chapters include:
Coordinating Project Planning and Fundraising Planning
Confidence and Communications
Building a Strong and Committed Board
Project Planning
Project Delivery Strategies
Prospect Identification and Cultivation
The Case for Support and Campaign Materials
Precampaign Planning Study and Campaign Readiness
Staff and Volunteer Solicitation Training
Managing the Campaign
Grants and Government Funding
Churches and Faith Based Institutions
Historic Preservation Projects
Parting Thoughts

Despite its limitations, this is a solid publication and a very helpful addition to the body of materials currently available on the subject.
