Amazon.com Review

Believing that wonderful paint effects need not entail the many complications of oil-based materials, acclaimed painted-finishes expert Debbie Travis has developed easy step-by-step methods for terrific-looking treatments, all achieved with water-based supplies. With large, beautiful photos, clear instructions, and well-chosen colors, she demonstrates 35 different finishes for walls and floors (textured, patterned, and stone types) and for furniture, trim, and accessories (antique and specialty, metallic, and stenciling methods), plus four "master techniques" (colorwashing, ragging, sponging, and dragging). Travis also gives careful attention to getting started, which she believes intimidates people even more than learning the actual techniques. She explains how to find inspiration, choose a style appropriate to your own tastes, and select colors. Even the most timid of amateur decorators should be able to handle most of the techniques presented in Debbie Travis's Painted House. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

Debbie Travis' Painted House

Paint has long been valued as a fast and creative way to give your home a fresh new look, and for the first time, the host of the popular television series Debbie Travis' Painted House shares the well-kept trade secrets that have made her one of today's hottest painted- finishes experts. Based on her groundbreaking philosophy that spectacular paint effects need not be the product of messy oil paints and complicated techniques, Debbie Travis' Painted House offers complete instructions for more than thirty-five incredible finishes, all created using worry-free water-based paints and glazes.
In the first section, "Getting Started," you'll learn all you need to know about materials, tools, surfaces, and preparation, including the pros and cons of different types of paint and how to make your own inexpensive alternatives to costly professional brushes and tools. You'll also find inspiration for choosing colors and working around a specific theme, such as a Southwestern or English Country style. The next section covers finishes for walls and floors, offering patterned and textured looks. The final section demonstrates finishes that work best with the smaller surfaces of furniture and decorative accessories, such as gilding and faux tortoiseshell. Each project--from a simple colorwashed wall to an elegant faux marble mantel, from a time-worn antiqued sideboard to a contemporary looking "sheet metal" table--is accompanied by detailed photography and step-by-step instructions, as well as suggestions for alternative looks and valuable tips to ensure truly professional results.
Lavishly illustrated and packed with important information, precise recipes for creating unique paint effects, and a complete source list, Debbie Travis' Painted House enables you to (almost) effortlessly achieve today's most sought-after decorative looks.
Barbara Dingle has written and edited extensively for the design and decorating market for fifteen years. She shares Travis' passion for painted finishes, and when not writing about them can be found transforming her own walls "with a bit of paint." --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL BOOK EVERY NOVICE DECORATOR SHOULD OWN, May 5, 1998
By eawinkler@msn.com (Convent Station, New Jersey) - See all my reviews
Tired of white walls, I purchased (and returned) several books in an effort to learn how to make my new home look like those photographed in magazines. In particular, I was looking for an easy procedure for the Ragging Off finish. Debbie Travis' book provides that and more. Each finish for walls, furniture and floors includes a brief description, a list of paint and tools, easy instructions with photographs and several variations of the featured theme. Equally important, her TIP sidebars helped me avoid costly and time consuming mistakes. The most creative chapter, Patterns, includes Squeegee Stripes, Combing, Terra-Cotta Tiles and Stone Blocking. Another favorite is the Carrara Marble effect in the Stone Finishes chapter. This book has something for everyone regardless of style preference, experience or ability. It's an absolute must for novices and professionals alike!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book on the subject, April 13, 2001

We used the ragging off method in this book to do up a little girl's room. We did it in shades of peach and beige, with a pretty wallpaper border in matching shades from the local building supply store. It didn't cost much and the result is STUNNING. I'm not a fan of a lot of stenciling, faux this and that, but I have to say, this book has techniques that really look amazing.

We practiced on scraps of wood or wall board to gain confidence before plunging in. I can't wait to try some of the other techniques.

If you run out of rooms and furniture to renovate, you can always restore yard-sale finds and donate them to church or school craft fairs. WAY too much fun. This book is a real treasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE "AVERAGE PERSON" COULD ACTUALLY DO THIS!, April 27, 1998
By A Customer
I highly recommend this book to anyone planning to redecorate. I wanted to colorwash my bedroom and looked at dozens of books that contained hopelessly complicated directions requiring obscure ingredients. This book is clear, readable, contains simple directions, and uses easy to obtain ingredients. I have no artistic ability and still got great results. My interior decorator is very impressed and is ordering her own copy of the book!
