This psychological thriller circumvents an investigative protagonist and shows how extraordinary circumstances can arise from ordinary lives. A dullish, obsessive-compulsive judge and his timid, unassuming wife become the objects of a newly released rapist's harassment; however, as the rapist continues his practices of mail fraud, opportunism, and violence toward women, the judge and his wife begin to reexamine their relationship. Yorke's intensely thorough and sensible writing style builds inexorably to a completely satisfying conclusion.
