Review
"When the history of HIV/AIDS in communities of African descent is written, it will be full of stories like the one LaJoyce is telling. What we must grapple with as we read is how we got here in the first place, including our collective responsibility to halt a preventable disease that kills and still has no cure." -- Debra Fraser-Howze President/CEO, National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS

"In the Age of the Down Low (DL), LaJoyce Brookshire has written a timely and thought-provoking book that must be on the top of the list for every woman and man in our community. Faith Under Fire touches the soul and tells the story of an amazing woman who went through the fire and survived. And we can all become better for it." -- E. Lynn Harris New York Times bestselling author of I Say a Little Prayer

"LaJoyce has all of my blessings.... It took a lot of courage to fulfill her vows while at the same time enduring the rage that comes with the revelation of deception. Read this book as Ministry.... Increase your faith, and know that NO weapon formed against you shall prosper. Jesus the Christ is real, and because He is the Greatest Power...we have no fear." -- Bishop Samuel L. Williams President, New Gospel Experience Ministries, Vice-Chair, Gospel Announcers Guild

Product Description
The bestselling author of the novels Soul Food and Web of Deception, LaJoyce Brookshire tells a true story more shattering than any work of fiction. It's her story. A memoir of survival against the odds and courage in the face of a troubled relationship and a terrifying illness. A chronicle of faith under fire.

Imagine the joy of being swept away by your very own Prince Charming, and the excitement of marrying him. Imagine starting a life together. Imagine discovering a side of him that you never knew existed -- a controlling and explosive side. Imagine watching him slowly, inexplicably dete-riorate before your eyes. Imagine his doctors telling you, "He has AIDS."

That was the reality for LaJoyce Brookshire, and in this page-turning, astoundingly moving memoir, she tells the full story of her marriage to her first husband, who knew he was HIV positive at the time they wed but kept this information hidden from her -- until his body betrayed him.

Imagine how you would react. What would you do? Contemplate murder? Divorce? Live in denial? Or would you turn to God?

That's what LaJoyce chose to do in the face of her husband's health crisis -- and every other challenge life has presented: With her faith firmly planted and with God beside her at all times, LaJoyce faced the deadly secret that had been kept under wraps by her husband -- and by his family, who knew of his condition but revealed nothing. She stayed by his side, coordinating his care and even changing his diapers, until the end.

Faith Under Fire tells the story of a marriage tainted by lies, but it also tells much more: a capsule portrait of the specter of AIDS facing African-American women today, it reveals how fear, ignorance, and secrets perpetuate the disease. In a poignant narrative overflowing with her gutsy humor and vibrant spirit, LaJoyce Brookshire shares her faith in all of its richness. She offers a living testament to relying on God's strength through any ordeal, and shows how His truth is all we need to believe in, every day of our lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ms. Brookshire is a Woman of Strengthen, June 8, 2006
She did exactly what Jesus would have done. She stood by her lying, sick, selfish, dying, husband's side until death came and took him. In spite of everything she knew about him and his family. What a woman! What a strong WOMAN OF GOD! She is one of my Heroes. She has the faith of Job in the bible. She knew and she believed God was going to bring her through strong and better than ever. What a blessing in the end!

5.0 out of 5 stars (RAW Rating: 4.5) - Tried in the fire, March 15, 2008
By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers (RAWSISTAZ.com and BlackBookReviews.net) - See all my reviews
The romance between Steven and LaJoyce is the stuff of fairy tales. A handsome, alluring man captures the attention of a very attractive female. They are feeling each other and a whirlwind courtship leads to a beautiful, albeit hasty marriage. After the lavish honeymoon, the nightmare begins and does not end until Steven is dead. What Steven failed to share with LaJoyce is that he had AIDS. She finds out only after he enters the hospital with an unknown ailment - unknown to LaJoyce, that is. She holds on to her faith in God as she grapples with the reality of being deceived and despised by the man she loves as she unselfishly cares for him to the end.

Oftentimes God puts us through a test of faith just as He did Job. This is LaJoyce's test and she is truly tried in the fire. She remains true to God and stands firm on her faith in situations that would make a weaker person give up and walk away. I empathized with all she had to endure and admired her resolve. FAITH UNDER FIRE reads like a dramatic novel instead of the true memoir of a real person. Although LaJoyce is tried in the fire, she comes forth as pure gold.

5.0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal!!!, March 14, 2006
By Lucy Prawl (Saylorsburg, PA USA) - See all my reviews
A story of fortitude mixed with faith! This book contains issues of relationships, faith, love, career, finances, wellness, sickness, life and death. This is a must read for all women who do too much! This book causes one to look at their life with open eyes. The message about taking control of one's health, spiritually and physically, is apparent. The other messages are weaved in to give a panoramic view of this writer's life. She overcame obstacles and was able to rise above it all. Despite her daily challenges, she was able to empower others and get the job done with faith! I could not put the book down! She is truly "God's Girl."
