2.0 out of 5 stars Flat characters made this an uninteresting story, in spite of the suspense, August 23, 2006
By Gemma "bookworm" (Alberta, Canada) - See all my reviews
From the back cover:

When Wendy Hawk found Brad McKenna--wounded and unconscious--she acted instinctively to save him. But Brad was no victim of a random accident. He was a DEA agent running from deadly enemies. Wendy quickly sensed his desperation...and his desire. And in the anonymity of darkness and unanswered questions, this driven man and his angel of mercy were drawn together--because now the killers wanted both of them dead.

And my review:

This was my first try of this author's work, and ANGEL OF MERCY, originally published in 1988, shows its age. This is a romance very typical of the 80's, which had much more focus on descriptions, intrigue plots, and raw sex than it did on actual romance.

That was my big complaint about this book. The suspense plotline was fairly well executed, but when paired with a lackluster romance, it just wasn't interesting enough to keep me turning the pages. I was never able to get emotionally invested in the characters. There were still one-dimensional halfway through the book. Wendy was a lonely, eccentric woman widowed much too young. Brad was a man with an overwhelming sex drive who is fleeing for his life. Okay, so? I needed them to grow and develop beyond the inital character sketches, and it just didn't happen.

Maybe her writing improved over time (as it does with most writers), as this author has quite a following. I might give her another try in the future, but only if I borrow her books from the library. ANGEL OF MERCY is not a recommended read.
