4.0 out of 5 stars Badly organized but rewarding, September 20, 1998
By A Customer
This book is based on a series of lectures that Adler gave in the 1930's. When he decided to publish them, he unfortunately published his lecture notes verbatim and then grafted on pages of explanatory notes and extensive footnotes. In his autobiography he rightly calls this "a monster in the form of a book"; you have to turn from the main text to the endnotes constantly, and the citations to other works are overwhelming. If you can get over all this, though, this is a rewarding book. His main point is that, although Freud rightly discerned the subject matter of psychology, namely man qua man, his writings are an uneasy amalgam of scientific findings, philosophy, and groundless speculation, and these elements must be carefully distinguished in order to find the gems and discard the dross. And speaking of gems, the book is almost worth buying just for the introduction by Dr. Franz Alexander -- a model of the self-important drivel that psychoanalysts were spouting in the middle part of this century.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just some information, September 25, 2002
The full title of this book is 'What Man Has Made of Man: A Study of the Consequences of Platonism and Positivism in Psychology'. It was originally published in 1937; this is a reprint.
