Review

"It's in the Rhythm" is a read full of romance, triangles, and surprises. Sammie Ward gives readers two hot opinionated, hard-headed characters to love in Garrett and Trinity. I look forward to the next one. _Shon Bacon, The Nubian Chronicles Magazine, www.tnc-magazine.com

Product Description

R&B singer Garrett Martindale is at the top of the music charts. The son of a Baptist preacher, he travels home for a relaxing two weeks vacation, but the trip is far from relaxing. His father is determined for him to return to his gospel roots, his sister is keeping a secret from the family, and the woman he loves becomes engaged to another man. Can he find a way to put everything in rhythm? When the breakup of her relationship leaves Trinity Blake devastated, she rebuilds her confidence and has a new lease on life. That new lease is tested when Garrett Martindale comes home for a visit and her ex-boyfriend returns unexpectedly. She ultimately has to choose between the man who has her heart and the man trying to capture it. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Doing The Right Thing Isn't Always Easy - But It's Worth It, September 6, 2007
By Apex Reviews (Durham, NC USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: It's In The Rhythm (Paperback)
Garrett Martindale is living the dream: he has left his small-town roots and made it big in the music industry, becoming a huge R&B star reigning at the top of the charts. He has money, he has fame, and he has legions of women screaming his name. One in particular, the incredibly beautiful Imani, craves to settle down with him and start a family, but Garrett has no time for serious commitments, no matter how alluring the prospect appears.

Achieving superstardom isn't easy, though, and the toll of making it to the top has worn on Garrett; so, taking a much-needed vacation, he returns to his hometown in search of some well-deserved R&R. Nothing he has ever experienced in the music industry, though, could prepare him for what he is soon to face...

Garrett soon becomes reacquainted with Trinity Blake, his old church choir compatriot, and soon deep feelings that he thought were long gone come bubbling back to the surface. Spending more and more time with Trinity, Garrett begins to reconsider his commitment to bachelorhood; however, just as he begins to think of settling down with his old crush, out of nowhere come both Darius, her ex-boyfriend, and Imani, each looking to reclaim what (and who) they feel is rightfully theirs.

Add to all this Garrett's father's insistence that Garrett rejoin the church and his gospel roots, as well as a devastating secret life that Garrett's sister, Tamara, has been living (which threatens to tear the family apart), and what follows is a series of unfortunate - and almost deadly - developments that hold little hope for anyone's true happiness to ever be fully realized...

It's In The Rhythm will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions with its full-blooded characters and true-life storylines. Ward does a great job of not sensationalizing anyone's particular persona or circumstance, instead presenting Garrett, Trinity, and others as more deserving of understanding and less of scorn or reproach. What can be learned from her tale is that, as human beings, we are all subject to rash decisions and misguided actions, but the common element of forgiveness unites us all and redeems our many misgivings. Even when we seek to hurt others through bitterness, jealousy, spite, or selfishness, such feelings never originate in a vacuum, but instead can be traced back directly to something done to us by someone that caused us pain - whether they were aware of it or not. In keeping with this theme, we understand the motivations of people like Darius, Imani, and Tamara, even if we disapprove of the ways they choose to express their hurt.

The smooth, conversational prose of It's In The Rhythm draws you into the compelling lives of its characters, lives that you'll find eerily parallel your own - which is not an easy feat for a writer to pull off. As such, Ward is to be commended for creating such a realistic tale so rife with the sonorous chords of true life.

5.0 out of 5 stars "...A charming read that is romantic and full of unexpected surprises.", March 16, 2007
By Books2Mention Magazine "Editor" (www.Books2Mention.com) - See all my reviews
This review is from: It's In The Rhythm (Paperback)
"It's In The Rhythm is a charming read that is romantic and full of unexpected surprises."

"Trinity Clarke is a teacher trying to bounce back after a difficult breakup with her boyfriend Darius. Things begin to look up when Garrett Martindale who happens to be an old friend comes back in town, now a successful R &B artist. Trinity and Garrett eventually spend time together and soon discover that they share deep feelings for one another."

"Garrett has been dating the successful model Imani, but realizes he's unable to commit to her because he has been in love with Trinity for as long as he can remember. Just when he has hopes of having Trinity's heart her ex boyfriend reappears and changes everything."

"Not only is Garrett upset over the potential loss of a relationship with Trinity, but he is also caught up in some family drama. Will Garrett and Trinity find true love or will they let what they share slip away."

"Sammie Ward does it again, creating another great story that readers will not want to put down."

3.0 out of 5 stars Finding Their Rhythm, July 31, 2009
By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers (RAWSISTAZ.com and BlackBookReviews.net) - See all my reviews
Trinity had a huge crush on Garrett, but to her, their friendship was more valuable. They became good friends while members of The Praise and Worship Choir. Under Garrett's leadership, the choir was headed for great things. However, Garrett decides to pursue his dreams of singing secular music and now he is a famous R&B singer, with awards under his belt. When Garrett returns home to spend time with his family, he immediately contacts Trinity, because she was the one person who understood him and he had always had a crush on her. Yet, they try to be just friends, but they soon realize their feelings for each other run deeper than friendship.

As much as the couple want to be together, there seems to be roadblocks to cross, some easier to negotiate than others. When Imani, Garrett's on-again, off-again girlfriend shows up, tension builds, not to mention Trinity's ex-boyfriend decides he is ready to get married now. Will this couple find their rhythm for each other?

IT'S IN THE RHYTHM is a romance and family drama all rolled into one. With the church being a central focus, the family dynamics are in full force from the very beginning. There were a couple of subplots that were interesting and engaging dialogue. The storyline was intriguing, as well. Although an interesting read, I wasn't quite able to garner true romance and love between Trinity and Garrett; this was due in part to there being several different characters and subplots with their own hosts of issues which, at times, took away from the overall premise of romance.
