From Booklist
This first novel, though a little thin in the plot department, should appeal to mystery lovers who are also film buffs. Margaret O'Banion is a film editor; her lover, Max Skull, is a top-of-the-line director completing his latest film. Nestled away in a Northern California valley, Skull shoots film while O'Banion edits, and in addition to the usual tension inducers (skyrocketing budget, too-short schedule, etc.) there's a new one: someone is trying to sabotage the movie, and the signs seem to point to Amory Evans, a distinguished--and deceased--film editor. It's up to O'Banion to play amateur sleuth and save Skull's movie--and perhaps his life. The lack of a well-developed plot gets in the way, as it does in so many first novels, but Sloane provides a whopping surprise near the end of the book that helps considerably. There's also enough movie-biz detail to keep film buffs turning the pages. Give this series a chance; there's talent here, and it's a good bet that Sloane will keep getting better. David Pitt
