Editorial Reviews

From Rhythm Magazine
This Cuban-born Miamian dropped a promising basketball career to hang out at Bob Marley's mother's house, playing and singing with Bob's half brother Anthony Booker as well as Ziggy and the gang. Forming his own band, Copacetic, Johnny had some short-lived success in 1990 before retreating to the mountains of Jamaica. Now he's back with the first volume of a planned seven-album series, lavishly packaged with multiple gatefolds. Chapter 1 opens auspiciously with the lush keyboards, solid rhythm and exquisite percussion of "Who We Are" and delivers a winner with "King and His Character."From the South African-flavored guitars of "His Majesty" to the down-tempo blues of "Armageddon" to the searing guitar solos of jammin' cuts like "Roots," this well-produced effort is aimed squarely to please fans of the Third World/Peter Tosh school of rock-influenced cultural reggae. Johnny's voice is deep and authoritative; he's got the Jamaican accent down, and he obviously loves Emperor Haile Selassie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Potentially Life Altering, March 1, 2001
By Eric Ornella "Seeker of the Sublime" (Cincinnati, Ohio United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Every once in awhile, in other words, rarely, does an album come along that is brilliant in every aspect of its incarnation. Well, Johnny Dread has produced just such a masterpiece. From its powerful rockin' reggae to the deeply inciteful and spiritually aware lyrics, Vision is nothing short of music at its absolute best. Even the packaging is beautiful in the extreme. We just saw Johnny perform at the 2nd Annual Bob Marley Music Festival in Orlando and he absolutely stole the show playing most of the material from this release. Every cut is strong but our current faves are Vision: THE blow-away rock-reggae song on the album; Who We Are: a powerful opener that lays it all out about Johnny and his mission; and The King and His Character: which reveals his beliefs in Rasta. Johnny is a true believer out to inform the world of the peace and beauty he has found thru Rastafari. He opened our eyes. BUY this CD and listen closely. You will hear the wisdom in it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review of Johnny Dread's VISION, August 3, 2000
By Ryan A. MacMichael (Northern Virginia) - See all my reviews
I love getting roots reggae from labels that I've never heard of before -- it shows that there are still people that find roots a viable form of music from a business standpoint. This is the first I've heard of Johnny Dread, but I hope it's not the last.

Vision is a beautifully packaged disc filled with ten positive, spiritual songs that echo similar vibes to Bob Marley and Lucky Dube. "Shoo Be Do" is a good example, where his backing female vocalists play a similar role to the I-Threes. It's a beautiful song, where Johnny sings of how music (reggae specifically) can be the unifying force between Asia, Jamaica, Cuba, and the rest of the world because "the whole world is Africa."

One of my favorites is "Comin Up," which has an ultra-catchy hook that reminds me of the current Morgan Hertiage vibe. Lyrically, it's on par with the rest of the cuts on this album. Johnny doesn't write short songs -- his lyrics are complex compositions that stretch many songs into the 6-minute range. There's no doubt that this guy must put on a wicked show.

Another favorite is the album's closer, "Rolla Costa," which has Johnny singing slower and more drawn out, though the rhythm itself is upbeat. This one reminds me of someearlier Israel Vibration. Other tracks cover Rasta philosophy and history ("King and His Character," "His Majesty," and "Vision"), life lessons ("Masquerade"), and the end of the world ("Armageddeon").

Johnny is backed by his own band -- I'm beginning to think that a band of lesser-known musicians is the sign of a possibly great reggae album. Maybe I've heard too many Sly & Robbie productions (absolutely no disrespect) and I'm ready for fresh, creative sounds like this. Give we more, Johnny Dread!
