3.0 out of 5 stars A Different Work, June 11, 2004
By W. Jamison "William S. Jamison" (Eagle River, Ak United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I would imagine this work was inspired by, and therefore a tribute to, Evanescence. It certainly is not an attempt to do the same songs with different orchestration. They take off on the melodies but play pieces unique to the character of the instruments. If you like string quartets and like the melodies you will find this intriquing and interesting. Otherwise not.

3.0 out of 5 stars Almost good enough, January 4, 2004
By Elizabeth Doyle (Austin, Texas) - See all my reviews
I have to admit, such recordings that actually have strings in them and the more classical goth twist to them are excellent. But that's about it. The "original" recording is horrible, it sounds NOTHING like an Evanescence song. Then there's such songs as "Going Under" that are just HORRIBLE! It really puts Evanescence down a knotch if you aren't a bit of a die-hard fan (like me). The beginning of Bring Me To Life before the cellos get at it is by far the best part of the "rock" songs they tried to re-do. And I won't even touch Tourinquet. My Immortal, which has violins in the background on the original recording and the piano, is okay. The cellos could be arranged better and the use of musical techniques in one of the cellos (I believe) could be tweaked to sound more vocal (at the moment they don't). Imaginary is well done, and I have to admit that it sounds pretty close to the original Evanescence recording. Haunted is also pretty good, the use of the "rock viola" (as they put it) was good, since it brings the original track into this CD more. The rest of the CD - final track aside - is fine.
I don't suggest getting it if you don't like Evanescence that much. It's definately for hard core fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but could be better, April 9, 2004
By The Solyn (Lawrenceville, GA, USA) - See all my reviews
I don't actually own this CD -- yet, I do intend to buy it -- but after listening to the samples provided, I'd like to have my say. I honestly think that this is not as horribly done as everyone else seems to consider it. As a part of an orchestra myself, I personally adore anything and everything strings, but granted this quartet doesn't nessecarily do justice to the sounds of Evanesence. The lower strings (particularly the base & cello) overpower the violias and both violins. If they had five more of each higher string, everything would have probably turned out a ton better.
