Editorial Reviews

There's pressure to perform when your last name is Allman, and Devon Allman does that and more on the debut album with his band Honeytribe. The son of legendary Allman Brothers' singer and organist Gregg Allman, Devon shows the influences of both his father (guttural voice) and late Uncle Duane (lead guitar straight out of the blues). Just barely 30 years old, Allman has encircled himself with first-rate musicians who have latched on to the jazzy, jam band elements of the Allmans and their brethrens in Gov't Mule. Though Allman's vocals aren't as silky or golden-toned as his old man, he has an ear for a solid Southern riff, most evident by bluesy efforts like "Mercy Mercy" and the Z.Z. Top takeoff, "Why You Wanna Bring Me Down." But there are more serene highlights on the record, as well: the love song "No Woman, No Cry" and the instrumental "511 Texas Avenue," a solo acoustic tribute to his late grandparents that wouldn't be a misfit on Eat a Peach." --Scott Holter

Product Description

2007 album from Devon Allman, son of Greg Allman (The Allman Brothers). Just say the name Allman and many things jump to mind: the epitome of Southern Rock, the original "jam" band, legendary live shows. It's a lot to live up to, but Devon and his band of tight-knit brothers of different mothers have risen to the occasion. Allman, whose voice is reminiscent of his father, Gregg, and whose guitar playing calls to mind other six-string gods, has been honing his skills since his early teens, spending his formative years with his mother in St. Louis, MO. At the end of 2006, the band went out for two months with Gregg Allman and Friends, earning the respect of the diehard fans of the elder Allman. Allman's Gibson Guitar endorsement led to the band performing last summer at the grand opening of the company's custom shop in Nashville as well as this year's CES Convention in Vegas, Provogue. 2007. --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Torch Has Been Passed!, September 10, 2006
By Baberufus (West Jordan, UT USA) - See all my reviews
Who better for the legendary Gregg Allman to pass the southern rock torch to than his own son, Devon? Honeytribe's CD proves that Devon is definitely a chip off the old block. His guitar playing is solid, as well as his vocals. He doesn't sound as much like Gregg as you might think--maybe a little, but he does sound a lot like Gary Moore from his "Still Got The Blues" days, with a little more southern rock grit. Joe Bonamassa makes a fitting appearance on one number, who is one of my favorites. The music is good all around blues rock, with maybe a little contemporary edge to make it current. I hope to see these guys in concert soon. Recommended for all Allman Bros. and blues-rock fans!

4.0 out of 5 stars Right on!, March 26, 2007
I agree with all previous reviews, if you dig the Allmans and Govt Mule, you will dig this CD. It is with the current southern, progressive jam vibe. His take on the Marley classic "No Woman No Cry" is a highlight. Take a chance on this newcomer and enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is good stuff, December 29, 2006
I'd never heard anything about this band until I saw this CD on [...]. I was buying a Govt Mule Cd and it was listed as one of those "Others have Bought" this cd: I checked it out and saw that Devon was the Frontman, Being a big Allman Brothers fan, I bought it and am I'm glad that I did. Kind of expected "Greg Allman Clone" style of music. I was wrong about that, this band is doing their own thing and man is it good stuff. If you're a fan of Electric Blues then do yourself a favor and buy this. You won't be disappointed. Nice to see that some of the younger generation is making good music and not wasting their talents with the usual boy band crap and chasing the all might dollar.
