Biography

Spawned from the urge to do something apart from his post-rock band Fridge, Kieran Hebden's Four Tet project balances organic and programmed sounds. Hebden formed Fridge with Sam Jeffers and Adam Ilhan while still in high school. When Fridge went on temporary hiatus for Jeffers and Ilhan to attend college, Hebden spent time playing with ideas gained from hip-hop and electronica that he hadn't had… Read more in Amazon's Four Tet Store

Editorial Reviews

Product Description

A 32-minute, four-track excursion into the kind of wide-open spaces you might find if you set out to make techno with an Afro-beat / krautrock sensibility. These are tracks that make you think of Berlin - Dakar - Detroit - but they could only have been made in London. All four are headphone epics, but are mixed in such a way you have to hear them at Plastic People or The End. "Ringer" carries that minimal pulse over into Four Tet, and while Kieran Hebden's trademark recuttings of jazz breaks may be less in evidence, his feel for harmony and melody is, as always, unmistakable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Give it another listen!, July 5, 2009
By Jonathan Hayes "Jaze" (New York, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This record is a grower. I was ambivalent about it the first time, now I love it. "Ringer" in particular - it's a bit like Rhythm is Rhythm's "Strings of Life", not in its sound, but in its extraordinary restraint. The moment when the live drum set kicks in is just astonishing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Relax a Bit, March 12, 2009
I enjoy this little CD, but not because I'm listening intently to find something, or catch some Four Tet similarity to anything. What is 'Techno' anymore, anyway? This EP is excellent listening to view the world, from your car window or bicycle or the Metro on the way home.

1.0 out of 5 stars Four Tet Doesn't Like Being "Pigeonhold", February 7, 2009
In his hardheaded attempt at trying to distinguish himself from his previous work(s), Kieren Hebden has reached rock bottom musically. I must say, I'm not a big fan of techno to begin with but what I hate more than techno is bad techno. It's very hard to review music or critique films but it's even more difficult when you're dealing with something so basic and obnoxious as Ringer. It's overly minimalistic and posh at the same time.

If you're into Four Tet's work with Steve Reid, give it a go, if you've started to enjoy less and less of Hebden's work since "Everything Ecstatic", just go ahead and throw this one in the gutter.

Effectively, Four Tet pigeonholed himself.

4.0 out of 5 stars fantastic
I have to disagree with the previous review - I think this is the best Four Tet release since Pause. It IS techno, but a most excellent example of the genre, imo. Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Get Out Your Glow Sticks
I wish I had listened to this album before I had bought it. I'm a pretty big Four tet fan, and I didn't think I needed to listen to Ringer to ease my fears of not liking it. Read more
