Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Master Bassist and first call player to the stars, Sekou Bunch 'finally' emerges from the shadows and takes his rightful place in the spotlight with his auspicious Trippin 'N' Rhythm records debut. Thirty plus years in the trenches providing the rock solid backbone for some of the brightest stars in the business; Michael Jackson, Anita Baker, Luther Vandross, George Benson, Whitney Houston, Lionel Richie, Roger Daltrey and Marc Anthony to name a few has provided Bunch rich opportunity to draw influence from rock, jazz and R&B all of which he stirs into an intoxicating and satisfying brew on Level. Bunch's feel and complete mastery of his instrument become readily apparent in the opening strains as he takes the receiver on a vibrant and scintillating ride. One you'll surely not want to get off.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Next Level, indeed! , November 10, 2008
By Mario Gordon (Detroit,MI) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I ordered this cd after hearing a couple cuts on the tv (cable music station). I was pleasantly surprised, to say the least. This is one of the best cd's I've purchased a long time. Sekou is one the best bassists on the scene today, and this cd cooks from start to finish. He's got an excellent supporting cast (all around; these guys rock!). I like this better than another cd from 3 of my all time favorites (yeah, I mean Marcus, Victor & Stanley's joint). I'm not saying he's any better than them, but this cd has more all around good music (the SMV project is mostly just them with very little added instrumentation ~ I'm a saxman myself; enough said). Back to Sekou; he plays with all the finesse & technique of the best, plus these songs are slammin'. He's got some remakes & some originals; they all hit the mark for me. Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Bassist with Great Interpretive Skills, October 19, 2008
By Michael Slay "Afu Udu" (OAK RIDGE, TN USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I had heard or seen Sekou Bunch's name on a few cd's. Actually heard one of his earlier tracks on an internet station and wrote the name down because of the innovative sound but didn't follow up. This cd instantly became a "player" in the sense that it's got play longevity given the slew of smooth jazz cd's me and my crew hear. Great sound, a different take on "standards", free flow creativity, Get this cd!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sekou Bunch Taking YOU to "The Next Level!", May 16, 2008
By Dionne M. DILLON-MALDONADO "The Jazz Lady" (Fayetteville, North Carolina United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Sekou Bunch finally has his "DO" after thirty something years, he's is showing out by performing some of the best bass guitar compositions and arrangements heard in a long time! I mean it. The man absolute has been in the shadows for far too long and has broken the mold of the stereotypical bassist. Sekou Bunch who has worked beside some of the greatest R&B and jazz icons in the music world shows us his amazing mastery and skill. He showed up and showed out on his interpretations of Sun Goddess; the great Jimi Hendrix piece Purple Haze, Funkabilly ---just outstanding.! You really need to listen to his great arrangement on the Brubeck composition Take Five, because Sekou Bunch took it to a whole new level- it's in five/three not five/four....for you students of the bass... a great piece to listen to inspire you...you're going to love it. Sekou takes you to another level with the funked out trip with his song "Haters".... love it! But, just when you think he's done he turns around and brings you back to chill with Smooth Sailing featuring the incomparable Angela Winbush from "back in the day" a true Diva/Songstress. If that's not enough he takes you on a serious chill and romantic ride with "Essence". Don't let this CD be the one that you fail to add to your collection... A must for the summer and for sometime there after! I just love it! It's has Funk, Soul/R&B, Rock, Caribbean and Smooth Jazz all rolled into one glorious CD. He definitely titled this CD correctly, and he takes you there with the "The Next Level". Don't just take my word for it, Buy It!

This was a great find, I like bass players and he certainly can play. I just did not like all of the tracks. I mean Funkabilly just did not make it for me.
