Biography

Another of super bassist Bootsy Collins' seemingly endless side projects, Science Faxtion is essentially the Praxis lineup (Collins on bass, Buckethead on guitar, and Brian "Brain" Mantia on drums) with versatile singer and guitarist Greg Hampton and programmer DJ Botieus along for the ride. Falling to the rock side of the funk line, Science Faxtion aimed for a futuristic funk sound (which is,… Read more in Amazon's Science Faxtion Store

Editorial Reviews

Product Description

From Rolling Stones Greg Prato: Science Faxtion, sees the funk great Bootsy Collins merging his unmistakable bass once again with guitarist Buckethead and drummer Brain all of whom previously played in Praxis. But for their forthcoming debut on Mascot Records, Living on Another Frequency, their goal is new.

We wanted to challenge artists and people in the music business, Collins says. We want to go somewhere where people haven t been yet. It s like taking that first shuttle to Venus you don t know what that trip is going to be like, you just know you re going. People have taken the experience out of the experience, and we re trying to put that back into music and make it fun.

According to the groups singer-guitarist, Greg Hampton who also co-wrote and co-produced Alice Cooper s latest LP, Along Came a Spider Science Faxtion began more straightforward. It started off that it was going to be a funk record. But we started exploring this concept of the future in 2099, that entails man being melded with computer, and how music will be made. Tracks such as first single Looking for Eden, Life is in Deliver, At Any Cost and What It Is (which features Chuck D), certainly rock hard with an unmistakably futuristic funk sound. We re going to use technology, before technology uses us, adds Collins. Because thats where we re headed. We re the Paul Reveres The British are coming, the British are coming! Technology is here!

3.0 out of 5 stars Another great Bootsy and Buckethead creation, February 13, 2009
To the guy that said Buckethead hasn't been involved with a decent album since Monsters & Robots 10 years ago; Sorry, man, but that's just whack. His solo releases number in the dozens since then, and his collaborations are numerous. This is simply the words of a hater and not a Buckethead fan, because such drivel would not have been typed by a true fan of Buckethead. Some of his best work has been released since M&R. He is obviously entitled to an opinion, but it sounds to me that it is based in ignorance. JMO!

That being said, this is not a bad cd. It's not the best collaboration that Buckethead has been in - just listen to Praxis or C2B3 - but it's a good hard rock cd that has some great moments. "Sci-Fax Theme" is classic Buckethead weirdness, very similar to something Praxi would write (considering three of the four members are in this band, no surprise!). "Lookin' for Eden" kicks some butt, with a serious killer solo and some great vocal trade-off between Bootsy and Greg Hampton. "At Any Cost" might throw some folks off, as it has Buckethead with a killer metal-type groove under some crazy vocals. I dig this kind of stuff, so maybe Zappa has ruined me to the point of not liking corporate cheese and instead seeking out the zany stuff. I won't go into each song, but the cd takes you on a crazy trip of different styles of music, and Buckethead shines throughout (which is always a treat).

Buy at your own risk, but I did not regret picking it up.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must have album for Praxis Fans, July 27, 2009
By Frogspasm (Australia) - See all my reviews
This is great album,I would throughly recommend it for Bootsy, Buckethead and Brain fans, it is very much like Praxis during the Transmutation album except the emphasis is moved slightly more towards the hard rock/Glam Rock area than Praxis would venture as result of the Greg Hampton influence.
It has all the things you expect from this crew weirdness, hard rock, metal and funky grooves all mixed up and jumping around in the playful way that only these guys can achieve. There is plenty of blistering guitar, quirky philosophically quotes and ufology.
I cannot understand why this album has not received the attention it deserves.
