Editorial Reviews

Review

This Washington, D.C., crew, assembled by bassist Robert Fox and guitarist Michael Shereikis, was initially inspired by the musical legacy of Nigerian icon Fela Kuti. The album opens with 'Struggle' a thunderous bit of Afrofunk that does, indeed, invoke the Fela Kuti vibe. Further adventures in this groove include 'Dog Days' and 'Weigh Your Blessings' while 'Herky Jerky,' bristling with heated horn solos, is a potent instrumental number. Chopteeth's reach extends beyond Afrofunk, however. 'Upendo' is all about South Africa, including a lyric sung in Swahili. Malian griot Cheick Hamala Diabate joins the band on 'Wili Nineh' working a song that, appropriately, praises the band members. The closer, 'Condition Is Permanent,' features D.C. rapper Head-Roc in a bangin' rap-Afrofunk fusion that sounds exactly like something Fela would be into, were he alive and kicking. --Billboard

Review

They cook. They dance. The organs are fat. The horn section is beastly. And the protest ( Struggle ) generally takes a backseat to the party (Upendo ). Their LP is called Afrofunk Big Band. It's great. And without giving too much away, I can say that its a prime candidate for the 2008 iteration of our Year-in-Review Top 10 List. What s not surprising about the disc is the quality of the playing they're aces, and we've know that for a while. But we didnt know they had the composition to match the chops. (Much of the credit goes to guitarist/singer/principal songwriter/recording engineer Michael Shereikis, though Anna Mwalagho contributes some songwriting alongside her exultant vocals.) --Washington City Paper

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a fantastic album!, October 2, 2008
By Edenmarc (Oakland, CA) - See all my reviews
Chopteeth is a large Afrobeat band out of Washington, D.C. Their music is fun, funky and full of surprises. They've received plenty of acclaim for their live shows in the D.C. area, and their studio debut is equally impressive. The album states that it is dedicated "to those who see their world clearly, respect their fellow earthlings, and love to dance!" And it sure doesn't disappoint! The songs are diverse, ranging from traditional Afrobeat to innovative jazz-funk to soft Afro-Caribbean melodies to hip-hop. But the album also hangs together beautifully as a single whole. It's a real delight, from start to finish. In these difficult times, music is my refuge -- and this is at the top of my playlist! Treat your mind and body to a real treat and buy this album!

5.0 out of 5 stars A celebration of West African music blended with American pop elements, December 12, 2008
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
A dozen musicians blend their talents in Chopteeth, a celebration of West African music blended with American pop elements. Featuring hip-shaking percussive rhythm, five-piece horns, call-and-response choruses, Chopteeth exults in Afrofunk while unashamedly reaching out to other musical elements as diverse as salsa and Balkan time signatures. An album of pure enthusiasm, meant to stimulate the joy of dance as much as the pleasure of good listening, Chopteeth is highly recommended for public library as well as private international music collections. The tracks are Struggle (5:28), Weigh Your Blessings (5:53), Upendo (5:34), Snake Eyes (3:49), Dog Days (5:24), Wili Ninneh (3:07), Herky Jerk (5:06), Eyi Su Ngaangaa (5:20), Fogo Fogo (6:44), and No Condition is Permanent (6:15).

4.0 out of 5 stars Chopteeth are awesome!!!, August 10, 2009
By M. Denzin (Gaithersburg, MD USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
We were lucky enough to see Chopteeth out in Leesburg during a picnic event. Their sound is so world music and yet so approachable for a US audience. The lead singers are fantastic. Anna Mwalagho is not only beautiful but sings wonderfully. We were in a mixed audience (I mean kids and adults) and she played as much to the children as she did to the adults. Michael Shereikis is extremely versatile including an interesting rap segment as well. The songs are/can be politically centric which is fine by me. I kept wondering what Shereikis and company would sound like teamed together with Gil Scott Heron?
