In my own words
Although a "child of the sixties" who is possessed of "San Francisco values", I differ from most of my contemporaries in two ways. First of all, I am not optimistic concerning the future. I believe that the complexities of modern technology are driving us inexorably toward bureaucratic despotism. In fact, they have already given birth to an embryonic bureaucratic state within a state in which power is held not by elected officials but rather the intelligence community, above all the CIA. It ...[more]
Interests
When I am not engaging in research and writing, I enjoy growing bamboo (have published two articles on the subject in the journal of the American Bamboo Society)and tending my Japanese garden. I hate modern technology and would like to return to the horse and buggy days. I collect samurai swords, and am saving up to buy an antique carriage and hopefully, one day, an Arabian horse for riding. I love Nature and wildlife of all kinds and decry its destruction. I am also fascinated by the physical aspects of the natural environment, the tectonic processes which lead to earthquakes and volcanoes, and the Earth's electromagnetic field.
Favorite Items

Favorite Books

Montesquieu's The Spirit of the Laws; the various writings of Tocqueville; John Stuart Mill's On Liberty; George Orwell's 1984; James Burnham's The Managerial Revolution; and among more recently published books Alfred W. McCoy's A Question of Torture: CIA Methods of Interrogation from the Cold War to the War on Terror; and Colin Ross MD The CIA Doctors.

Favorite Music

I love most Western Classical Music with the exception of that of the modern era. I listen to Chopin and the French impressionists every day, the great symphonic works when I'm elated. Randall Thompson's The Testament of Freedom, based on the words of Jefferson, and Beethoven's Fidelio have special meaning to me, especially now, as my mind is always on the inmates of the secret CIA prisons... I listen to Debussy's Nocturnes every night before I go to bed, as it is so evocative of the fog which characterizes my favorite city, where I lived most of my adult life, San Francisco. I also listen frequently to classical music from Japan, China, Persia, Indonesia etc.

Favorite Movies

My favorite movies are Rashomon, Judgement at Nuremberg, Mutiny on the Bounty (1960s version, Marlon Brando) and Oliver Stone's JFK. I love anything about the triumph of Justice over injustice and am a natural supporter of rebels and oppressed people everywhere.

Other Favorites

I love the Pacific coast and the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Muir Woods, Yosemite... My favorite historical quotes are Thomas Jefferson, "Rebellion against Tyranny is Obedience to God", and George Mason's "I would not forfeit the approbation of my own mind for that of any man, or all the men upon earth."

1.0 out of 5 stars PSYCHIATRY AND POLITICAL OPPRESSION, August 11, 2008
This is a very dangerous book. It is not what its title suggests-- it is not about the reduction of funding for mental health services, a legitimate matter for concern. It is about the struggle of patients and ex-patients to free themselves from the forced treatments which the authors favor... Read More
