Fourteen-year-old Georgia Nicolson is back in British author Louise Rennison's irreverent, laugh-out-loud sequel to the Michael L. Printz Honor Book Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging. Written in diary form, these truly hilarious books chronicle the often minute-by-minute, very dramatic, and significant flip-flops of a teenager's psyche.

My eyes are all swollen up like mice eyes from crying. Even my nose is swollen. It's not small at the best of times, but now it looks like I've got three cheeks. Marvelous. Thank you, God.

9:00 p.m.
I'll never get over this.

Time goes very slowly when you're suicidal.

What tragedy has her so distraught? Her parents have told her she's moving to New Zealand just when she's managed to snog (kiss--look it up in the glossary) the SG (Sex God, a.k.a Robbie). This is of course not the only source of drama in Georgia's eventful life. Her half Scottish wildcat, Angus, who is the size of a small Labrador, herds the poodles next door and terrorizes the neighborhood. Her little sister, Libby, who is slightly mad, stores her "pooey knickers" and her scuba-diving Barbie doll in Georgia's bed. Her mother (from whom she inherited her orangutan eyebrow gene and possibly her "gigantic basoomas") is clearly inhabiting Earth solely to make her life miserable, and even her best friend Jas is "half girl, half turnip."

Despite the fact that she's spared from going to "Kiwi-a-gogo land," things don't get much better for Georgia. She's suspended for a childish prank right before her dad returns from New Zealand, she falls in love with the SG who dumps her for being too young, and Dave, the "red-herring" boyfriend she's using to make the SG jealous calls her a "heartless whatsit." And, she continues, "the spot on my bum is probably a boil. I wonder what Buddha would do now?" Rennison's comedic timing is brilliant. Adolescent angst ("I hope I am not driven to the brink of madness by grief") vanishes less than an hour later ("Angus can fetch sticks!!!") and sometimes even sooner. (Warning: Do not read this book while riding a train or bus unless you don't care what people think of intermittent explosive laughter. Seriously.) (Ages 12 and older) --Karin Snelson

Fans of Rennison's debut, Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging, will not be disappointed with this hilarious sequel. Georgia Nicolson's laugh-a-minute narration picks up right where it left off. Vati (as she affectionately calls her father) is off working in "Kiwi-a-gogo land" (New Zealand), and Georgia fears that she will lose the Sex God (Robbie) if she and her family are forced to join Vati. But even when an accident at work ensures that Vati will return and the family will not have to relocate, Georgia loses the Sex God anyway. In a letter, he tells her that she "seem[s] so young" and recommends that she date his younger brother's "really nice mate called Dave. He's a good laugh." So Georgia promptly nicknames the fellow "Dave the Laugh" and sets out to attract him as a way of making SG (Sex God) jealous. Some comical subplots involve Georgia's Mutti (mother) flirting with a George Clooney-look-alike doctor in Vati's absence, Angus's obsession with a Burmese pedigree cat across the street and the reappearance of SG ("I opened the door./ It was the Sex God./ At my door./ Looking like a Sex God./ At my door./ The Sex God had landed at my door./ I was wearing my Teletubbies pajamas"). Will Georgia go for the looks and "retrap" the Sex God? Or will she go for the laughs and end up with Dave? Stay tuned for the next installment. Ages 12-up.

Even as a 40+ year old, I thoroughly enjoyed this sequel to Angus, Thongs, and Full Frontal Snogging. I read the first before placing it in a middle school library and knew right away it would be a hit with the teen crowd, but I also recommended it to several adults. As soon as I knew the next installment was available, I ordered it immediately. The sequel manages to maintain the originality and charm of the first. Georgia's quite a girl--a typical teen, but with a dry sense of humor and an ability to poke fun at herself. The supporting cast returns in full force--Robbie,AKA the Sex God, her friends, family, and of course, Angus who, in this book, suffers along with Georgia through the throes of love. Just as in the first, I found myself laughing out loud, finally giving way to tears. All in all, this is a delightful book that can be enjoyed, certainly by its' intended teen audience, but also by a slightly older crowd.

Oh, to be young again! Reading On the Bright Side had much the same effect on me as its predecessor, Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging. It was totally reminiscient of my by-gone days; if fact, I pulled out my old high school diaries and laughed myself silly. Georgia is the epitome of a typical 14-year-old high school student, British or otherwise, and readers of all ages will most definitely relate to this wonderful character.

This time around, Georgia has landed the Sex God, aka Robbie, boy of her dreams. But with his being almost 18, the relationship is short-lived and he breaks up with her via letter. Well, of all things! Georgia just will NOT stand for this. Thus ensues Operation Elastic Band, Georgia's no-fail plan to get Robbie back. The results are, as expected, spectacularly funny as only Georgia can offer.

Readers will no doubt have a great time with this novel - it's just plain, harmless fun. Complete with hilarious observations and sparking with classic British humor, On the Bright Side is unforgettable. I cannot say enough good things. Clear a space on your bookshelf for this one.

Georgia is like any other 14 year old - which is why I realized that this author had practically written a book about me! Louise Rennison's writing is easy to read and she presents the characters in such a way that you can relate to them instantly. After I read Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging, I went on amazon.com every day to see when the second one was coming out and waited in anguish for a week for my book to come. All I can say is read this book! I thought it was even funnier than the first one, and my only complaint is that it should have taken place over a whole year, like the first one. Georgia's further adventures with the Sex God, wet Lindsay, Jas, etc. will make you laugh so hard that you'll cry. If you laugh a lot, don't read it in school - I had to bite my hand to keep from laughing, and in my next class I fell off my chair. So, just read this hilarious sequel and try not to roll off the bed, get in trouble, or experience any other side effects of the book.
