Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Like mother, like daughter-or so the saying goes. Unfortunately, this debut romantic suspense novel from Lowell (daughter of author Elizabeth Lowell) is ridden with run-of-the-mill characters and overused plot devices. After a night spent joining a dating service, Claire Lambert stumbles across a murderer in the act of committing his latest crime, drops her purse and runs away, only to wake the next morning with little memory of the night before. As Washington, D.C., detective Sean Richter tries to coax her into remembering, she finds herself falling in love with him. There's only one problem: she may be the killer's next victim. In an outrageous plot twist, Sean devises a plan to send Claire on closely monitored dates with men from the dating service she joined earlier. This scenario provides the potential for some fun scenes, but the gag falls flat when each date proves to be a cliche (a stuffy banker, a closeted gay man, etc.). In addition, the reader learns early on that the murderer never joined the service, which deflates any hope that tension might arise from this scenario. Most disappointing of all, however, is the distance the author places between herself and her characters. This narrative detachment results in protagonists who lack definition and sex scenes that fail to evoke emotion.

Product Description
A serial killer has one obsession . . .

Claire Lambert walked into a nightmare on a rainy night in Washington, D.C. Stumbling upon a killer in the midst of his latest bloody crime, she ran for her life -- but not before a head injury caused her to lose her memory, along with her purse and ID. Now a monster knows who Claire is . . . and where she lives.

Waking up in a hospital room the day after being attacked -- her mind stripped of all memory of what happened to her -- Claire can only listen with horror to the scenario Detective Sean Richter unfolds before her. A law officer fiercely dedicated to ending the wave of brutal killings that has struck the city, Sean knows that this brave and beautiful woman holds the key to stopping the murderer before he can strike again. Claire is the only victim who has seen the killer's face and lived -- which is why Sean needs her help and will risk everything to protect her . . .

And why a depraved, relentless animal is determined that Claire Lambert must die.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent foray into romantic suspense!, October 9, 2004
By B. L. Young (Livermore, CA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I purchased this book on a whim and, after reading the Publisher's Weekly review, nearly didn't get past the cover. I'm certainly glad I chose to judge it for myself. I completely disagree with the professional review of this work. Sure, the storyline could have been tightened up a bit to achieve a faster pace. Personally, I think the onus for that belongs as much to the editor as the author. But, for an inexperienced, nascent novelist this was an excellent foray into romantic suspense.

The prose was terse, contemporary (young and fresh) and rang true for me - something so lacking in many romance novels. The plot's climax was gripping. The characters grabbed hold of my heart such that, when the last page was read, I felt a sense of bereavement at the thought of ending the book; Ms Lowell crafted characters for whom I cared very deeply. For me, that sense of loss at a book's conclusion ONLY occurs with the very best characterizations from the likes of Nora Roberts, Julie Garwood, Linda Howard and, of course, Elizabeth Lowell.

I acknowledge that TV soap watchers may consider the amnesia plot device to be shop-worn. However, the plot devices used in this novel worked for me - they were well-crafted, intriguing and mostly believable. And the date scenarios were certainly no more clichéd than that which we find on episodes of Sex in the City. In addition, I did not find the love scenes to be prosaic in the least. For anyone who is TIRED of flowery, syrupy, melodramatic love scenes, you won't find them here; you won't find the typical fomulaic phrasing, the esoteric and worn-out euphemisms nor the vaguely-described action. I found Ms. Lowell's love scenes to be plausible and titillating yet tasteful. They were exactly right.

For myself, my next click is to order the second Heather Lowell book. She's earned a place on my list of must-buy authors. Keep `em coming, Heather!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved It!!!, January 19, 2004
Claire sees the face of a murderer right after he has committed his crime. He chases her and she gets away but not without injury. She is unable to remember the murder or the murderer. Sean is the police detective who is in charge of Claire's case and tracking the serial killer who is pursuing Claire to rid himself of the only witness to ever see him. Sean and Claire are attracted to each other. Sean knows he can't get involved with a witness but he can't stay away from her either. This was a great first book from a new author! I enjoyed it will definately purchase Heather Lowell's next title when it comes out. I recommend this book to all lovers of romantic suspense!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, June 7, 2004
This is a GREAT book, especially seeing as how it is Heather's first book. Great suspense, wonderful romance. I expected Heather's writing to be similar to her mom's (Elizabeth Lowell (a.k.a. Ann Maxwell), and was shocked at how different her writing is. You will not be disappointed. I can't wait for the next book. Thanks Heather for the wonderful book.
