Editorial Reviews

Product Description

A company's logo is the most important component of its brand identity. So why would a company ever change its logo? Because things change -- the competition, the times, even the company itself. And the company whose logo does not reflect present realities is at a marketing disadvantage.

In this comprehensively illustrated compendium, David E. Carter shows 200 corporate logo changes, and then discusses each. You'll see everything from minor "evolutionary" changes to complete "revolutionary" changes where the old logo has been discarded and a totally new one designed. Examples of the ultimate logo changes -- where a new corporate name has been adopted -- are also included in this book. Packed with case studies on logo redesign, it features companies both large and small, and from a diverse array of industries -- global firms such as Apple Computer, UPS, and Time Warner, as well as small firms who compete, no less vigorously, in their own arenas. This essential resource will be invaluable to designers, ad creatives, marketing people, and corporate executives whose task it is to keep their firms competitive in this changing world.

4.0 out of 5 stars GOOD SOURCE, GOOD DESIGNS!, January 19, 2007
This book is a very interesting collection of before-after logo design cases. Each case is explained by its designers, and it presents examples of outsatnding logo designs from several countries. I find it very useful as a teaching tool, and to show clients what a good design cand do for their image.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource, September 8, 2005
David E. Carter's recently released book, from Harper Design International, features great examples of "before and after" identities for 200 companies including professional sports organizations, major corporations, products, restaurants, educational institutions and "mom and pop" businesses. The designs presented include logo recreations from numerous design firms, including Hornall Anderson Design Works, Rickabaugh Graphics, Sayles Graphic Design, Alexander Isley, Inc., Dotzero Design, yours truly and many others. Each identity representation is accompanied by a brief explanation, written by the designers themselves, adding to the reader's understanding of the visually displayed transition from old to new logo. If the book has any shortcoming, it is that the reader is left wanting even more information about the projects presented - or additional concept visuals of the process of getting from previous to current identity. Still, the volume is an excellent resource for any identity designer who may need a creative "jumpstart" in taking on the overhaul of a client's current logo. - Jeff Fisher, "Logo Notions" column, CreativeLatitude.com
