2.0 out of 5 stars Not LLG's best, March 1, 2007
I found this book rather silly. I'm a big fan of American heiress-marries-English nobleman stories, and the setting of Italy was a breath of fresh air, but this book was not. The characters weren't very well-developed. Margaret was supposed to be 24, but after the initial chapters she turned into a dithering fantasy-obsessed piece of fluff that caused me to question her age. She wanted to marry for love, but she was so treacly-sweet and naive she began to irritate me. Also, for someone who was part of the wave of Americans who were, to be blunt, paying for titles and estates through the husbands that came with them, an heiress coming to Europe to marry for love was highly improbable.

Trevor was your standard historical romance hero. You know the type: broody, dark, handsome, and dangerous, with a chip on his shoulder about love and marriage. He's just inherited his title and of course it's bankrupt. So he decides to seduce Margaret--with the support of her father I might add--into marrying him without letting her know it's for her money. Might I add that he was also a very flat, very standard character? No depth at all to him to make him stand out.

The initial plot was fine, but as the story went on, the plot turned wild, what with Italian bandits and kidnapping, etc. The scenery of Italy wasn't used to its fullest potential(may as well been England), and the abrupt entry of the cartoon cut-out villain made the climax utterly uneventful. This is far from LLG's best IMO. It's not horrible, but it isn't something you'd read when you wanted a really juicy story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Guhrke always a favorite, August 10, 2009
Another good book by a very good author. She creates a nice amount of attraction and tension then puts the H/H in some interesting (however unlikely) venues and the result is an enjoyable read.
