Editorial Reviews

Review

"It's an honor to review the tenth edition of this classic text. The eighth edition helped me learn pharmacology 10 years ago, and ninth edition has helped me teach pharmacology in recent years." "Numerous tables help to classify and organize this massive body of knowledge." (Journal of American Medical Association 20020401)

"For 60 years (first published in 1941) Goodman & Gilman has been a widely used pharmacology text." "The tenth edition is a must-have book for faculty abd graduate students. It will challenge undergraduate students, but is recommended as a reference/text with which they should be familiar and comfortable using." (American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education 20020301)

" The tenth edition is a must-have book for faculty and graduate students. It will challenge undergraduate students, but is recommended as a reference/text with which they should be familiar and comfortable using." (American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education 20011001)

"There are other reference and textbook options for pharmacologic information, but Goodman & Gilman's The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics remains the gold standard for the most comnprehensive explanantions of clinical pharmacology. It is an invaluable reference and is highly recommended as a guide for all healthcare professionals." (The Journal of Pharmacy Technology )

"As the most comprehensive of all the pharmacology textbooks, this edition continues the excellent tradition of this icon in pharmacology. It is the "gold standard" of pharmacology texts, and is often affectionately referred to by pharmacologists as the "bible." "4 Stars" (Doody's ) --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Essential for the Pharmacology Part of the Boards!, October 23, 2002
By "lynkfri13" (Waltham, MA United States) - See all my reviews
~ ~
This pharmacology book is solely responsible for my honors grades in pharmacology and on the national boards.

All topics are covered comprehensively, with far greater clinical application than most pharmacology texts.

The chapter organization makes sense, and it is well indexed. This was one of the few med school books I kept and used for years after leaving clinical medicine to go into research.

I used the book for researching medications for family and myself - information on side effects and interactions was very good.

There are almost no illustrations, and few charts, so it's not easy reading, but it is definitely worthwhile.

5.0 out of 5 stars great for the right audience, August 1, 2001

This book is great for the right audience, and for the right job. This book is not for the following people/jobs: 1. Medical students. If you are a medic, and you need a text for your pharmacology class, try the simpler and less detailed books like Katzung's. The level of detail in G&G may be overwhelming. 2. As an intern/resident, you really don't have the time for such details either. A pocket guide comes in handy for your day-to-day work. This book is excellent for research purposes, especially for presentation at a conference, for pharmacists and pharmacologists, and for others directly involved in drug dispensing or manufacture.

4.0 out of 5 stars VERY CLOSE TO BEING PERFECT, November 8, 2002
By reviewer (Zurich, Switzerland.) - See all my reviews
"Goldman & Gilman's The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics" is one brain toasting book. It reminds me of the "Principles of Pharmacology: Basic Concepts & Clinical Applications" (edited by Paul Munson). Of course, either of these two books can serve as a reference tool; and although the latter maintains a price advantage, 'Goldman & Gilman's' is more ubiquitous.
It is rich, versatile, and presents well laid-out voluminous chapters. Anyone who reads this book will appreciate how it tackled General Therapeutics, Biochemistry, and Molecular Biology.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clarification about the edition
This is the 10th edition, published in 2001. Not quite as 'out-of-date' as suggested by the previous reviewer. It is, however, dificult to keep these texts current.
