5.0 out of 5 stars This is NOT an Expensive Book!, April 25, 2000

If you are a jeweler, thinking about becoming a jeweler, or interested in how jewelry is made:

BUY THIS BOOK!

The price tag may scare some people off, but this is one of the best practical books on jewelry ever written.

Oppi Untracht does an excellent job of pulling expertise from diverse techniques from all over the world to combine them into a compendium that rivals any other. The chapters are sensibly divided in a manner that makes complete sense. The index is huge, detailed and accurate.

Oppi, our hats-off to you! Thank you for a work that can inspire any one from the absolute novice to the consummate professional. However, (Hint, Hint!) an update with pictures in color, and a well-indexed database on CDROM (with an excellent search engine) would preserve it for posterity.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Oppi book (jewelers' bible), August 14, 2005
This book is a must for any serious jeweler but unfortunatly the copy i recieved was 99% black and white the original was full of colour and is a much better book for the artistic types However the book i recieved still has all the pictures in B&W and all the technical info which is what i really wanted from the book, if you are considering buying this book i would suggest trying to find the colour version ISBN 0-7091-9616-4

4.0 out of 5 stars Exploitative pricing, good book., March 4, 2000
By edfan "edfan" (Southern California) - See all my reviews
I'm glad I'm not the only one who noted how out of date this tome is, despite its usefulness as a portable history. It is no longer an exhaustive collection of techniques and tools. It needs updating.

This field is frequently overpriced, IMHO. They know their market will tolerate it. As long as this item sells, it will command its overprice. The used book dealers actually sell it for more than Amazon sells a new copy - so be glad Amazon exists!
